changing your address

Britt's thread got me thinking about mail since we are moving in a few weeks. I was at the post office the other day and I couldn't find the form you can fill out to change your address (and they were so busy I didn't want to wait to ask someone). I know you can do it online, but they charge you a $1 (no big deal) but the bigger deal is that they require you to use a debit card to verify your identity which I am not fond of.

Does anyone know if you can only change your address online these days? It has only been a year since I moved last.

Re: changing your address

  • You can change your address at the post office.  Just ask them for the form.  IMO, online is much easier, however.  T

  • I think you HAVE to do it online now.  I haven't seen those forms laying around the PO in a few years that I can think of.

I could be wrong.  But honestly, doing it online saves time.

  • Yeah, I know online is definitely quicker. We are just not too keen on having the government know our debit/credit card numbers.

  • If you go to the post office they still might charge you.  I thought the reason they charged you was to verify your identity in case you were changing someone else's address fraudulently.

Don't worry about them having your debit card number Missy - they already have your social security number, which is much more informative.

If they want those numbers they can get them.  They don't need you to give them to them.

I would just do it online.  I hate P.O. lines.

  • ditto barrel. the gov't can get any information they want- in fact they probably already have it. unless you give them a reason to look twice (like a boatload of unclaimed income), i really wouldn't worry about it.

  • We did it earlier this year with forms at the PO for free. I believe doing it online is a charge. I don't remember handing over any credit/debit information.

Thanks Min. Hopefully the next time the PO won't be so busy and I can ask for the paper form. I just moved last year, too, and had the paper form.
