Les Miserables?

Is anyone interested in doing a book club/read-along for Les Miserables?  I read an abridged version in high school and then went to see the Broadway show with my lit class.  The show is coming to Detroit in the spring and I want to go see it.  I bought an unabridged copy of the book awhile ago and reading it before the show seems to make sense.

It is really long and I think it will take about two months to read.  Is anyone interested?  I'd like to start by January at the latest.

  • Hmm... if it takes you two months to read, then it would take me four months.  Is it slow to get through because of the heavy writing style (I'm thinking Anna Karenina and Vanity Fair) or just long (like Gone with the Wind)?

I've seen the movie a couple of times, but I've never read the book or seen the live performance before.

  • It is very long and the writing style is on the heavier side, more like Dickens than Tolstoy though. I think it was originally a serial novel so I anticipate plenty of parts that drag without advancing the plot (as are often found in books like Karenina). How long did AK take? I would say LM unabridged would probably be double that.
  • AK took me just about two months.  So, I think I'm going to bow out on Les Mis.  Sorry!
  • That is a bummer Kasa. You could always grab an abridged copy of the book and check in based on that. Otherwise, it looks like you and me Amaretto. Want to start on December 1st?
  • I was going to tackle Les Miserables after reading GWTW. The reference to it in GWTW reminded me that I had wanted to read it for years. Unfortunately I don't have time time to read it right now. At least not the time I really would like to dedicate to it. Let me know what you think of it though.
