Hello Ladies,
I know I haven't been on in a LONG time.. but I found your advice useful before and I have a feeling it will be useful now.
SO, I did some research on cameras a while ago and told DH what I was thinking, he ended up bringing home a point and shoot nikon that looks like a DSLR but doesn't have the function. I finally returned it after feeling bad and not wanting to tell him it was the wrong one.. he's been so sweet. ANyway, I returned that one and really want a DSLR. Obviously I'm a beginner but I've always loved photography. I took a poll on FB to see what was better, canon or nikon... It seemed like canon won for point and shoot and nikon for DSLR.
We want to buy a DSLR in the next week or 2. I can't make a decision because I'm sure I'll love whatever I get but I want to make sure that I'm making the right choice.
For those of you who have knowledge, what DSLR that is on the market now, under 1k, is the best? Or.. recommend your camera. Do you think a Nikon is better or should I get a canon?
This would be mainly for photographing people and travel, not really sporting events or anything like that.
Please help shed some light!
Re: camera question!
ive got a canon t1i, and i adore it. the nikon thats about the same grade as that, i believe, is the nikon d5000? it is definitley under $1000.
i heard awesome things about both and played with both. i just preferred the way the canon felt in my hands. its important for such a heavy camera that it feel comfortable to hold it. dont forget to take into consideration the price of a good camera case (so you dont break it), and a memory card. that will probably be another $100 total. also, look into the type of lenses you want, since you might be able to find a kit that has another lens with it (so 2 in total), one will be the regular kit lens and another could be a larger zoom lens. i think thats the norm in those package deals. but lenses are really expensive - if you decide to get another, try to get a fixed f/stop or at least once that is not too variable. so if it say f/6-10 for a zoom lensyou might not be able to get the best focus that you want (i.e. blurring the background) at all lenghts of zoom. you'd be better off with something thats f/3-4 if it has to be variable.
its alot to process and i probably said too much lol. you'll learn once you get one and it will be awesome and lots of fun. so my suggetsions would be either canon t1i or nikon d5000.

i love photography. i have been using my canon rebel xt dslr since september 2007 and i still absolutely adore it and take it everywhere (although looking to upgrade since i've had this one for a long time now!)
the one i am wanting to upgrade to is the canon eos 550d/rebel t2i. it looks freaking amazing, and the video it takes looks dang professional. i'm currently saving up for this one
i'm definitely a canon girl

jacqui- since i've seen a bunch of photos you've taken, would you suggest i jump right in with the canon eos 550d/rebel t2i or is there another canon that you suggest? i'll probably purchase from target because they offter a warranty that we've used before with success.. plus.. DH works for Target so he prefers to buy stuff there or Best Buy.
here is a link to what's at target.. i've also seen some camera kits at costco that seem like a good deal.. http://www.target.com/Digital-SLR-Cameras-Camcorders-Electronics/b/15855841/ref=sc_fe_l_4_1042096_6?node=15855841
I've held both canons and nikons and they feel the same to me... a little different than my point and shoot.. ahha
since you already know you like taking pictures, i would just go ahead and go for the t2i because there's no reason to get a lesser model
i want that camera so bad! hahaha...take a look at this sample video it took on youtube:
