So, I just caught the oven on fire...

So, our oven has been yucky for the last few weeks since I made cupcakes.  I guess some of the juice dripped on the bottom, and the last three times I used it, it smelled like it was burning.

My oven has a self-clean option; so I think, GREAT, I don't have to clean it myself!

I put the oven on self-clean after making dinner tonight.  About 5 minutes later, I go to check on it, and there are FLAMES in the oven.  Not horrible, but enlarging by the second.

So, naturally I FLIP OUT!  I told DH to get the fire extinguisher and he's just standing there, so I go grab it.  BUT when your oven self-cleans, it locks itself.  So I freak out and call 911.  In the meantime, we figure out how to turn the self clean off and the flames go out.  DH flips out because he says we will have to pay the fire company if they come out, so I called 911 back to cancel the call.

Now, the oven is finally cooled down and I can open the door 20 some minutes later, but it's still too hot to clean myself yet.

Yoi, not what I expected my night to turn into.  Am I stupid or would others have assumed the self-clean option meant you didn't have to do it  yourself.  Ugh, whatev, at least the house isn't in ashes!!! Tongue Tied

Cupcake Juice?  What kind of cupcakes were they?

I'm pretty you just hit the button and it works it's magic.  I know it normally stinks so I try not to use it.  Any idea what would cause the flames?  Did you google it?

I'm sorry you're having a bad night.  Confused

  • Wow, I've never heard of that happening when you clean the oven! Glad everything is okay though!
    Anniversary
  • It was more like pumpkin cookies that taste like muffin tops for clarification, lol.  I had to put one batch on a baking sheet that is more made for pizza (i.e. it has holes in it) because I was in a hurry and needed to get them done before going to a party.  That in turn created the thick guck on the bottom.  So it was real sticky and that's what I think caught on fire...

It says in the owner's manual (which I of course referred to after the fact) that they recommend you clean any debris from your oven before using the self-clean feature, go figure.

  • Yeah, you gotta clean that kind of stuff by hand.  I never use the self clean unless I'm leaving the house.  It stinks!
  • I was reading this on FB.  :)  Poor Danielle!!!
  • Oh my gosh, that is crazy! Glad you guys are OK, sounds like the same thing I would do in a situation like that

  • Oh no!  I'm glad you're both ok, I would be freaked out.  I have only done the self clean a few times.  It does smell like everyone else said, and I've gotten a little smoke coming out, but my oven never caught on fire, that's crazy!

  • wow, that's a bad night, I'm a little ashamed to say that I've haven't cleaned the oven, I haven't had any issues with it but have been thinkng I should lateley, but thanks to your cautionary tale I'll know to pre-clean before letting the oven self clean  :)
