S/o carpet cleaning

I got a new area rug about a year ago and I did not clearly think through the implications of a rug with light yellow/ cream background. Mud has been tracked on it, we have cats so their hair is all over it, and then the other day dh and I decided to spice things up and he err dripped on the rug. I was going to rent one of those rug cleaners from kroger but after reading the other thread on rug cleaning a few threads down, perhaps I need to just spot clean? How should I remove these stains from my rug? I've got these little spots of mystery dirt and the uh organic stain about the size of a nickel. It's a wool rug if that makes any difference. Thanks!

Re: S/o carpet cleaning

  • I would read up on carpet cleaning machines-there are grocery stores/hardware stores that rent them out for about $30.00 plus a little extra for the cleaner ($5.00?). They also have upolstery cleaners hose attachments for the carpet cleaner machine-I am renting one for my couch and carpets.....I would make sure though, you wouldn't want to ruin the wool.
  • The Rug Doctors? Don't do those! We did that a few months back (even though people on here told me to stay away from them) and our carpets look horrible now. Terrible. I'm just about to post about buying a steam cleaner for our house and ask for product recs (it's why I came to this board) - using those old machines that are filthy from other people's homes and never get cleaned = a Bad Idea. Stay away!!
  • I have a Hoover Steam Vac. Our house is just DH and myself, so we don't really have any stains. (Our sex life is boring compared to yours!) However, when we first moved in, there were two dogs that lived here. DH is allergic to dogs. The cleaner got the smell and all the dander up.

Our carpet is pretty nice. You can't tell when it's dirty. When we clean it though, you can see all the crud in the water.
