Bottles of wine per number of guests?

I'm hosting a potluck in my home next month and along with providing a food item to share I also plan on providing wine and another non-alcoholic beverage.

Does anyone know a good rule of them for how many bottles or wine I should have per certain number of guests?  I don't want to go nuts on wine but I also don't want to under guess either.

I suppose I'd rather end up with too much because I can always drink it later Wink But I don't need a ton of wine sitting around the house either!

Re: Bottles of wine per number of guests?

  • Well, I always figure there's about 4-5 glasses in a bottle.
  • I think it totally depends on how much your guests like wine.  At my family gatherings, it is normal to plan 1 bottle per person (!!  Our parties tend to start early and go late so 4 glasses of wine over 6 hours is not as bad as it initially sounds!)  If your guests don't care much for wine, they may only have a glass - or none at all.  Hard to say.
  • When I hosted book club, I had 12 guests and 6 bottles of wine, plus a pitcher of lemonade. My guests were wine drinkers though so there was only half a bottle of wine left at the end of the night.

I got three bottles of white and three of red wine.

  • Oh, and I went to the Liquor Barrel and just walked up and down the aisles and got the $4.99 bottles of wine (or cheaper), my goal was to spend less than $30 on booze.

  • If they are big wine drinkers I would do one bottle per person.  If not I'd do 2 people per bottle.

  • It kind of depends on your guests, like others said. Are they big wine drinkers? Are there any people in the group who won't drink any wine? How long is the party going to last ... is it just dinner or are they staying all night?

When I have people over for dinner, I plan on 1 bottle per 2 people. My friends aren't huge drinkers, and often times, one person in each couple won't drink at all or will only have one glass because that person is driving home.

However, for a party that will last all night (not just dinner), I plan for one drink per person per hour. I always have some leftovers, but I'd rather have leftovers than run out during the party.

  • Thanks all!  A few of us are big wine drinkers and a few aren't so I think I'm going to plan on 1 bottle per 2 people and it should even out.
  • I used to manage an Italian restaurant and we priced our wine estimatined 3.5 glasses a bottle.  Depending on your friends, I would guess at least 2 glasses a person.  Trader Joe's has tons of bottles in the $3-$7 price range.  You can look super classy with your nice wines on a budget.

    Good Luck!
