Who usually hosts Thanksgiving dinner in your family?

Re: QOTD

  • The last few years I have. I just do it for my family though and usually one of the guys that is on the same rotation as Russ.

  • Currently we alternate between my MIL's and my dad's.  However I am thinking that over the next couple of years, DH and I may start hosting.  We will see though, because it is nice to be able to leave Thanksgiving dinner with leftovers and nothave all the clean up after. Hmm

  • Usually my dad. My immediate family doesn't live near any extended family. We're flying home for it this year, and I'm super excited for his cooking. Thanksgiving at our house is very low key. Two years ago we had a Wii bowling tournament after dinner.

  • We do our own thing. In the past few years some family members and friends have joined us, but we never travel anywhere.
  • DH's grandma.

Last year, however, we hosted it for my family because my step-dad was in the hospital and we didn't want my mom staying at the hospital all day. I'm pretty sure that DH's grandma still hasn't forgiven us for that which I think is completely crazy because of the 9 Thanksgiving dinners that we spent together since we started dating, this was the first one that we spent with my family. Vent over.

I'm also not sure what we'll be doing this year either.

  • Since I met DH, it's been his Mom who hosts.  She and her H live 6 hours away, and we drive down for the weekend.  We usually bring a smoked turkey, and I help cook everything once we're there.

  • The past few years DH and I have traveled to both families on different weekends. My family  we go to on Thanksgiving since my parents still work and his family on the weekend since they are retired. They live very far apart 4.5 hours it's a very long drive.

Last year we spent Thanksgiving with his family because it was the first year his Grandma had past away.  I think that will have started the precedent that we alternate Thanksgiving between families and go to my parents this Thanksgiving. All that driving sucks.

  • We alternate between J's family and mine. We do at least try to stop by and visit the other family though. Holidays usually consist of J and I stopping by like 5 places.

  • Both my parents and my IL's do. We usually go to our IL's first since they have dinner ready by 4 in the afternoon. At around 6:30 we head to my parents house since they tend to have dinner at 7 or a little after. So far it's worked out great every year and all I do is bring dessert.

  • We started out by trying to do both families and it got to be too much. Then we started to try alternating, and that got annoying, too. Now, we've talked with DH's family and are doing Thanksgiving at our house, then Christmas Eve at BIL's and Christmas at IL's. Hopefully it will work and not be a complete disaster. I have to say, the holidays we spend just at home are so much better. I prefer to eat in my PJs and watch football and be done with socializing early.

Also, the IL's are awful cooks, so I can't wait to show them how turkey dinner is supposed to taste. Seasoning is our friend Smile

  • My mom hosts. It's usually my mom, my grandparents, my uncle & aunt, my sister, mom's gf, mom's gf's son & DIL and they're 4 kids, DH and I.

DH's parents are coming down this year to have Thanksgiving dinner at my mom's. I love that b/c it means we don't need to alternate holidays or drive to both places. His parents are about 3 hours away and my mom is in town.

  • Me!  We have both sets of our parents and our siblings to our house.  My family leaves right after dinner, and Ed's family spends the night (ugh).  It is great--we don't have to worry about splitting time between families, I don't have to eat MIL's cooking, and we get to stay home!

  • I hosted it in my little bitty apartment for Jim and his sister's family (his Mom doesn't do holidays) the first year I lived here.  The last two years, we have done it at her house, with SIL doing the turkey and me doing all the sides.  This year, Jim's brother and new GF are coming, so we will be at SIL again.  Otherwise, I would have lobbied for doing it at our new place.

  • My IL's do Thanksgiving. Someoneon my dad's side usually will also host and we will end up there for dessert.
  • My Dad will make it one day and ILs will make it another.  Sometimes the ILs have to do it another weekend based on work and other things.  It's only the 4 of us anyways, so it isn't a big deal to adjust the day.
