we finally got our new roof done this past week and when the guy came to drop off the invoice so I could pay him he said "here is your invoice and here is the total, plus any tip you want to add."
Is it normal to tip the roofer guy? He is the owner of the company and not the guy who even put the roof on. Besides that, it took 2 days longer than he said it would to get the materials and the guys to our house and then they didn't do what they were supposed to do so they had to come back and redo those parts twice. I didn't think he was deserving of a tip after all of that even though he probably didn't make any money on our job becuase of all his mistakes.
Re: tipping question
Is it just me or does everyone and their dog now expect a tip? Why should someone expect a tip for DOING THEIR JOB????
No, you should not have tipped them. That is ridiculous.
As a side note, I have a monthly report due to my boss - I may go ahead and send him an invoice for my tip. Also, I was on time to work for once so I definitely deserve at tip for that...
I think it is inappropriate for any service provider who dictates their own service charge to ask for, or even accept, tips. If you feel like you should be earning an amount above your fee... RAISE YOUR FEE. Someone once asked DH (it was a client he found for me) if I accepted tips for photography coverage... No. I also find it kind of inappropriate to tip hair stylists, make up aritists, nail technicians, etc. If I were just being charged for the product being used, that's one thing and I would tip them. But they include the cost of service in their price... So, no I don't really want to pay you extra.
Now, when people don't dictate their rate, they get paid by a company (ie. aren't self-employed), and/or are paid minimum wage (ie. restaurant servers)... Then I tip, and I tip big if it is deserved. I have spent the majority of my working life employed as a server so I think I'm more obscene than most in that regard.
I TOTALLY agree! I only tip waitstaff, people at the airport who take me to and from my car to the door, and some hotel staff. However I do tip my hair lady because she can always works around my schedule and the hubs' schedule and we very rarely have to wait any longer than a week to get a cut or color and she stays very busy and booked up.
