can you tell me about write-ins?

I got an email from my local group about the schedule for November's write-ins. I'm a little nervous as this is my first time!

Re: can you tell me about write-ins?

  • I haven't been to any of my local write-ins (mainly because I'm fairly antisocial IRL, and also because from the looks of my local NaNo group, they're mostly fantasy writers who like to dress up in costume when they meet, and that's just not my scene).  I know our local is really specific about the "rules" for write-ins.  Some are very clearly just to write - there's no visiting, just writing.  Some are clearly indicated that visiting, brainstorming, etc is allowed.  It's nice that they designate the expectations for each meeting so that people can attend the kind of ones they like the best.

  • I may attempt to go to one of the local write-in's at Borders a Nano girl is helping host this year. I am scared though...I'm a bit timid with people I don't know especially since I feel so newbie this being my first nano.

  • I didn't go to any of the write-ins last year because they were all during weekdays at places really far from where I lived. Right now my local board is throwing around ideas and some might be pretty close to me, so I may check one out.

I'm sort of anti-social too, so a write-in isn;t really my idea of a good time. I need to meet some local writers though, so it might be a good opportunity.

  • I went to a few write-ins last year, as well as the kick-off picnic. I actually got a lot of writing done there, and some chatting. One of the women I met during the write-ins/picnic has become a friend of mine IRL (we ended up going to the same writers conference a few months after NaNo, and we talk on the phone every few months). They can be really hit-or-miss, but some of the people in my area are really serious; others, not so much. I think it's fun to go just to meet people - I love to talk writing with others! Worst case scenario, you can always go to the write-in location, scope out the crowd, and if it doesn't seem like your scene just pull up a chair at your own table.

  • I think I may do that this year...even if I don't decide to do NaNo. I may just go scope out the people and see who/how they are. I'm always looking for more IRL writing peeps.

  • I went to one last year, and it was sort of weird, but I would go again.  There were just three of us who wound up going, and the other two people were boyfriend/girlfriend, so that was sort of awkward.  They were also a lot younger than me.  I got a lot of writing done that day, though, since I didn't have a lot in common to talk about with those two.  Ha!

I am planning to go to at least one or two this year, though.  There are a lot of new folks on my local NaNo board, and everyone seems really gung-ho and really friendly.  Someone is actually planning a 24 hour write-in for Veterans Day!  Yikes.

  • I'm planning to do a couple of the IRL ones this year but my region also does virtual write-ins via a chatroom.  We do Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8PM.
