X-ray results

The X-rays came back normal, so I should be relieved now...right?

As I mentioned, I have a friend whose daughter has this same condition. I talked to her about it and learned that her daughter was misdiagnosed after a blurry X-ray. And the doctor that did her daughter's surgery said X-rays are useless for this condition and if he had been in charge would have ordered a CT right off the bat instead. So my friend's recommendation was that I get a CT to confirm.

I want to get the CT. I don't want to spend the next several months worrying that the X-ray was read wrong. I asked her Pediatrician for a referral (I actually spoke to his nurse) and was told that he wants to wait until her 9 month appointment and see how she is then.

So, now I feel stuck. I'd feel much better getting a CT and ruling it out if we can. But I feel pressured to do nothing, which I know is going to have me staring at her head and worrying all. the. time. And I'm worrying whether my insurance will cover a second opinion and CT...but at least I can make a call to Blue Cross and get an answer to that.

What would you do?

Re: X-ray results

  • This is your daugher's head, her brain!  Of course, you're going to be worried until you know you have exhausted every avenue to be sure everything is normal.  There is no reason for you to spend the next three months worrying when there is something you can do about it.  Call BCBS and see what they say about covering a second opinion and CT scan, and then move forward based on their answer.  I know what it's like to be pressured by medical staff to do, or not do, something you feel isn't in your baby's best interest.  I chose getting a second opinion and felt soooooo much better afterwards.

  • I think it's normal to be worried about your daughter's brain, I know I would be.  I don't think it could hurt to call Blue Cross to see what they say.

It never hurts to have a second opinion.

  • I would definitely see about getting a second opinion, if only for your peace of mind.
  • I called BCBS as soon as I hit post and found out a CT would be 100% covered, so I called the plastic surgeon my friend recommended and made an appointment for Tuesday the 26th. After he checks out her X-rays I'll still have to go through the hurdle of demanding a CT I think, but the 2nd opinion is underway.

Also, I would feel much more assured if this guy tell me we don't need a CT since he's specialized in craniostenosis. If an expert looks at the Xrays and says we're fine I think I would feel a lot better than I do now.

  • Yeah - I'd call Blue Cross and see what they say. Even if they only cover a portion of it, if that's going to give you the peace of mind you deserve as a mom, go for it.

My doctor wanted to wait until JJ was at least 1 to get an eval for tubes from an ENT doc. I pushed for it to be much sooner, and when we saw the ENT doc, he wanted JJ to get tubes right away and said we probably should've come in sooner. Push for it.

EDIT: Posted after I saw your update. Yay!

  • glad you're going for the second opinion - i would too!
  • Glad to hear this is good news to start!

If you have any doubt, got for the scan.  If you don't, you won't be able to get it off your mind.

I'm glad you called and are able to get a second opinion from a specialist. I really hope this all turns out well. When you say her sutures may have closed up, are you talking about her soft spot?

No, her soft spot is still very apparent. The sutures are basically breaks between plates of her skull, where those lines meet there's a larger gap, which is the soft spot. This site explains it really well, and the picture is easy to follow: http://www.kidsgrowth.com/resources/articledetail.cfm?id=2398

For the record...found out last night that my friend and I take our girls to the same pediatrician...so my guy is the same one who misdiagnosed her daughter. SO happy with my decision to get an expert opinion.
