Wash out hair color?

I want my hair to be dark brown for halloween but I don't want it to stay dark brown. Have you ever tried a wash out dye? Did it wash out within a week? My hair right now is light brown with some high lights.

Otherwise, does anyone know where to get a good wig? Not super cheap looking but not very expensive. TIA!

Re: Wash out hair color?

  • I would not recommend the wash out stuff.  Just go with an inexpensive wig if it's for halloween.  I don't think you get a noticeable difference in quality until you get up to the ones made with real hair, and those are expensive.

  • I was talking to my hairstylist once about doing a temp dye job just to see if I liked another color and she said with highlighted hair, it does something funky with the bonding and it is tougher to wash out.  Instead of being wash out, it sorta become semi permanent??  Where's Mrs. Katematch... she might know!
  • DH needed a dark brown wig for his halloween 2 years ago.  We found a cheap one at one of those random halloween stores that popped up.  I think it was around $15-20.

  • Yeah I guess I'm not super opposed to doing a wig, just think my costume would look much better with my real hair darkened. I bought a wig last year for a murder mystery party at a hardware store for like $8 and it was sooo gross and everytime i touch it, my hands felt like they had really gross residue on them. I know I'll probably have to spend about $20-30 but I don't want to spend much more when you can get a whole costume for that much.

  • I've played with the "semi-permanent" hair coloring before.  They usually wash out little by little for about a month or so.  So, if you could handle your hair being a darker brown for about a month it might be worth trying.

  • Don't buy a wig at the Halloween stores.  They are totally overpriced.  Go to one of the Variety Beauty Stores around town.  They have a lot of wigs.  It is a store that carries a lot of haircare products for African American hair.  They have wigs up all around the store (at least that's how the one in Bloomington is laid out--Portland and 494).   You ask for what you want and can try it on.  (There will be wig caps on the counter to use when trying it on.)  I was Angelina Jolie for Halloween a couple of years ago, and I got a great synthetic wig for $10 or $12.  (Real hair ones are more expensive.)  It looked and felt great.  Way nicer than the ones that cost $30 at the Halloween stores.  Buy a two-pack of wig caps with the wig, and you are good to go.
