Do you use your dishwasher?
We have had one for over a year, but haven't installed it. My dad is going to put it in this winter, but I got to thinking that I may not use it as much as I thought. I wash dishes in the sink every day.
Do you feel like you waste water by rinsing dishes off before putting in the dishwasher? ugh...please help me make this decision!
Re: Do you use your dishwasher?
Daily. A cycle in the dishwasher uses less water than handwashing... and it's less work. I only hand wash pots and pans since *teflon shouldn't be put in the dishwasher, *I'm too cheap to buy new pots and pans right now, and *my dishwasher is old and has a stupid layout so there isn't enough room for pans anyway.
Most new dishwashers don't requiring pre-rinsing (you just have to scrape off the food chunks) since they have built in food disposals. I long for the day I can replace my beastly dishwasher with a new one.

We just bought a house 2 months ago. There's a brand new dishwasher installed which we haven't used yet. It's only the two of us and I guess I haven't figured out yet the logistics of it. Like, how many days worth of dishes before we run it? Does the inside get gross/smelly if we let it sit for a few days before running?
Neither one of us come from dishwasher families, so it's just a matter of getting us to do it that first time. Maybe then it'll catch on.
Oh you're definitely going to want to get that baby installed. If you're running a daycare from home you'll appreciate the ability to load it up, turn it on, and walk away. Plus the water will be much hotter than regular dish water so the dishes, bottles, etc will be sanitized, which is always a plus with a daycare.
Not to mention, the first time you get a kid with the flu or pink eye... just take the hard toys, throw them in the top rack and let it run.

We use ours all the time! The only things I don't put in there are pots and pans and anything that is not dishwasher safe. We have some wine glasses that are delicate and those don't go in either.
These days a lot of the new dishwahers say you don't need to rinse first, but we do anyway because I personally think food can smell, attract bugs, etc since we don't run it everyday-right now it's just my husband and I so we end up running it maybe twice a week.
Plus, you actually save water using a dishwasher as opposed to handwashing plus the dishwasher gets much hotter which sanitizes things better than handwashing would...
Its only me and DH but I bet I run it at least two or three times a week. I hate washing dishes, and I will put just about anything in there. The only think I don't is my Pampered Chef knives, cookware and stoneware. Otherwise everything else is fair game!
I think using my dishwasher actually saves water. I'd hate to fill up a sink full of water every night just to do the few dishes that DH and I used that day. It is way easier to fill our dishwasher over the course of a few days and run it only once or twice a week.
Before I had a dishwasher, I reused my dish water (gray water) to water my plants. The soap acts as a mild pesticide and the food particles add nutrients to the soil. If you don't want to waste rinse water, you could rinse everything into big bucket and then use that water on your house plants. Just don't use gray water with harsh chemicals like Borax, that has touched raw meat or human waste.

it's just DH and i, but we use our dishwasher every day. (sometimes it takes 2 or 3 days to fill it, but we add to it every day) we put almost everything in there- dishes, glasses, pots & pans (all stainless steel), pyrex, klean kanteens, reusable coffee mugs...etc.. we just don't put our stemware in it.
we really don't use anything disposable, so we have a TON of dishes. plus, we entertain alot, friends are here for brunch and dinners often! i can't imagine hand-washing everything every day!
