My dog does have lymphoma

I just wanted to post and give an update.  The vet doesn't recommend treatment so I will just watch him carefully and enjoy him while I can until I think he is getting uncomfortable and then we will put him down.  I knew in my heart what it was so I'm not surprised.  He thinks we might have 3 months but I don't think I will have that long - it is bigger than it was last week and he is snoring now - he never used to do that so I'm scared they are going to make breathing difficult for him so if they do we will put him down.  I'm not going to make him suffer because I am selfish and don't want to lose him.  He doesn't recommend putting him down now because he says he still has a high quality of life but if that is not the case then we will do it.  Thanks everyone, just wanted to update.

Re: My dog does have lymphoma

  • Oh I am so sorry to hear this! My thoughts and prayers are going out to you and your family right now.  Just remember to enjoy the time you have now and he will let you know when it's time to let him go....*Hugs*
  • I'm curious why he doesn't recommend treatment.  Lymphoma is one of the cancers that can be very responsive to chemotherapy depending on where it is.  I think I would at the very least consult with an oncologist.

  • I'm so sorry- I know that gut feeling all too well. Take this time to take lots of pics, some nice walks, and spoil him rotten. I hope he has many good days and when it's time, you will know and it will be the kindest thing to do. Hugs.
  • I am so, so sorry.
  • Hugs to you. My ILs just lost their golden from lymphoma maybe a month ago and only a month after being diagnosed.  It goes quickly.  Enjoy your time and spoil him rotten.

I think it is quite advanced unfortunately and the oncologist actually gave the recommendation about it, my vet just agrees.  He's had dogs both ways - with treatment and without and he does not think the time you get from treatment is worth what the dog may go through.

This is what I'm thinking - I would be surprised if I had a month honestly.  His snoring really caught me off guard so I don't know how long I have.  And he is getting loved on quite a bit now but I'm definitely increasing that!  To me his eyes look almost sad, his eyes have always been very expressive, but they look sad, but he might be picking up on my emotions as well.

  • I am so sorry to hear that.

One of my dogs growing up had a similar situation.  She had a very comfortable, low key last few months and actually passed away peacefully at home.

Lots of thoughts and prayers for you guys.

  • Thanks everyone.  I'm praying he is not in pain now and I just can't tell.  That would break my heart.  But he is eating and drinking and going potty like normal but I just don't know how long I have.  I want time with him but I pray it goes fast in a way too.  I hope that makes sense and doesn't make me sound like a bad person.  This is just really hard.  I am going to start explaining it to my son tonight.  I want to tell him we need to love on him extra because he has an owie and will be going to God just like his fish just did.  He had a Beta that died so I guess I can try to relate it to that somehow.

  • I'm so sorry. We lost our dog to lymphoma 3 years ago.  The nodes in her throat were very large, I'm assuming that is what your dog is experiencing.

You'll know when it's time. Enjoy him now and give him lots of love.

Let me know if you want any info about our experience.

Hugs to you. I am so sorry.

ETA: We did not do chemo either. It was quite far advanced, and the benefit would not be worth what it would have put the dog through. It's not a cure, just buys time.  We had 8 weeks from the time we first noticed the nodes and took her in, until we put her down.

I am sorry, I don't know your story but I am sorry if it is hard to read this.  It is amazing the pull animals have on our hearts.

  • I'm not sure how old yours is, but my 3 1/2 year old is handling things pretty well. I've already explained death to my son many times in regards to other animals which I think helped.

There are some nice books out there too. We received Dog Heaven and I have heard things about I'll Always Love You. I myself have not yet been able to read them out loud to B. If it has a dog in it, I can't read it right now.

  • I am so sorry and know how it feels.  My sheltie had cancer (not lymphoma) and lived a couple of months happily and went in his sleep.  I took advantage of the opportunity to feed any loved food without worrying about how healthy it is.  He loved getting yummy people food.  Let him have his favorites and hug him a lot.

  • Yesterday was a day I really don't want to experience again, we had to make the decision to give our baby  forever sleep, she was the most adorable rottweiler, at the age of nearly 16 years old, excellent condition no pain (the 1st of May was supposed to be her sweet 16), she suffered a stroke, woke up blind & paralyzed on the left side, it was all due to aggressive lymphoma, within 2 weeks after diagnosis. Rest in Peace Bashira, you place will be special.

You no longer greet me, As I walk through the door. You're not there to make me smile, To make me laugh anymore. Life seems quiet without you. You were far more than just a pet, You were a family member, a friend, a loving soul I'll never forget. It will take time to heal. For the silence to go away. I still listen for you. And miss you every day. You were such a great companion. Constant, loyal and true. My heart will always wear, the pawprints left by you
