Scaled-back holiday ideas

This year, we are desperately needing to scale back what we usually do for our family for Christmas.  I really need to keep things as economical as possible.

I'm thinking of making some homemade liquor (re-using the bottles that I had for the Limoncello I made for the wedding. They're really pretty cobalt blue bottles.) I found really easy recipes for making homemade Amaretto and homemade Kahlua.  mmm...

Then I was going to do gift baskets...maybe do some homemade breads (pumpkin, banana, or cranberry), jam, cookies, add the bottle of one of the liquors.  Do you think that's cheesy for family like our parents and siblings? Seem more like something you'd do for a friend or neighbor?

What are your ideas or plans for gift-giving this year?

  • I'm doing homemade teacup candles for each of the ladies I work with, maybe in a little giftbag with a nice chocolate bar or something.  I can go to a second-hand store for the teacups, so they're not all the same, and much cheaper too. Hopefully, they'll look like something like this:

Just noticed the matches.  Those would be nice to find a nice matchbox to go along too.

For the family baskets...I could always get different cocktail glasses, like a highball set, or a wine set, and then etch their monograms on them...maybe like this (but without the shotgun):

  • I looove those teacup candles! Your coworkers will adore them! Great idea!

I don't think it's cheesy at all to do homemade gift baskets. I think it's very unique and thoughtful to be honest.

  • my mom has always done baskets like that. They are always a hit. She makes homemade Kahlua. AMAZING stuff i've heard. I can't drink it because it has coffee in it. SHe makes Swedish bread and irish bread and usually makes christmas pot holders (snow men or x-mas lights) or tree ornaments.
