How often?

How often do you get your blood drawn and checked by your doctor?

It had been a while since I had mine checked, and this week my doctor went ahead and had them draw blood.  It was to check for diabetes and cholesterol, etc.  Well, I got a phone call today that I need to get it done again that they saw some abnormalities for my blood sugar.  She asked if I had fasted, and I said no (I had had an apple that day).  Umm, duh I wasnt prepared to get blood taken that day.  Ugh, sometimes I think my Dr just wants to get as much money as possible out of me.

Re: How often?

  • I want to say that it's recommended to have it done every five years?  I'm honestly not sure when I had mine done the last time...it might've been two years ago, when I last when to my PCP.

  • Obviously they've drawn my blood since being pregnant but before that I only had it drawn when we thought I might have a thyroid condition. I don't think it's normal to do it that often at all unless they suspect something is wrong.
  • DH goes for blood work every 2 months (Thank God for good insurance!) because he has rheumatoid arthritis and the medication he is on has to be closely monitored. I think I've had blood work done 3 times total in my life...twice by my primary dr and once by the OBGYN.

For the most part I think they only take it if they have a reason to.

  • I had blood taken in Oct 2009, and earlier this week.  The office and doctor obviously messed up on something and are making me come in again next week to get blood taken from me again.  :(
  • have never gotten my blood drawn in my adult life...

This doesn't seem unreasonable to me. It's a year later and things can change. I wouldn't blame the Dr. If you go to the Dr regularly this seems normal to me. I don't go to the dr unless I'm dying or now cause I'm trying to get knocked up!

I thought everyone had blood taken once a year (at least after the age of 30 anyway), Im just annoyed I have to go back in next week to get blood taken again bc they forgot to test everything, and they need me to fast this time.  My co pay is high, Im just frustrated about it.

If I didnt have any health problems, I wouldnt be going either!  I loathe seeing the Dr.
