Have you turned on your heat?

I am still holding out and am being stubborn about turning on the heat.  It's 59 in the house right now and a little chilly.

So, have you turned on your heat?  If not how cold does it have to get before you do?

Re: Have you turned on your heat?

  • Nope, we live in a garden level condo so stays decent, it hasn't gotten below 62 yet.
  • Nope.  Our house is MACed, so we have great windows and insulation.  And we face south, so we get a lot of sun in the windows during the day in the fall/winter.  We've yet to even drop below 70 degrees in the house so far.  Right now it is 73, and I have a kitchen window open.
  • dude, you people are making me feel like a big ol' wussy.

  • I turned it on before bed last night. I was trying to hold out until November, but I didn't make it.

I actually wasn't cold during the night, we have plenty of warm blankets on the bed so I stayed warm. It was just cold getting out of bed in the morning the previous couple of days, so I finally gave in and turned on the heat.

  • We haven't yet, but we've been feeling colder during the night and in the mornings now, so we might this weekend. We usually try to hold out until November if we can.
  • I should admit...our Master Bathroom has heated floors. We did turn that on (set for the morning and when we're home in the evening). For some reason it gets really cold in there, and that helps a ton.

  • We've had our heat on and off over the last few weeks.  59 is pretty chilly!  We usually set it at 68 at night and 65 during the day.  But it's a little colder Up Here.
  • We have not! We got new windows last fall and the coolest our house has gotten so far is 68 degrees!

Do you turn yours off in the summer? We have heated floors in our master bath and basement bath, and we just left them on all summer. Especially in the basement, those tiles are still freezing in the summer! Of course, both are on a programmable thermostat so they're not on overnight or during the day while we're at work.

  • I'm glad I'm not the only crazy one trying to hold out!

We do. DH is cheap. Our Master Bathroom is upstairs, and has a sunlight so it gets and stays pretty warm in there during the summer. In the winter though...IT'S COLD in there. Programmable as well. We have it come on shortly before we get up in the AM, turn off when we leave, and turn on right before we get home until we go to bed. On the weekends, it's on from morning to bedtime.

  • Not yet!  It was still 71 in the house when we went to bed last night.  We got a new roof put on Tuesday and we are putting plastic on the windows this weekend.  Hopefully I can make it to November 1st, I'm cheap!

  • We're in a side-by-side townhome and we still have the windows upstairs open.  I'm hoping to make it to Nov before we have to turn it on.  It's probably 65 in the house right now and we probably won't keep it much warmer than that when we do turn it on.

  • Nope.  We just moved into a bigger place and I am scared of the utilities bill, lol.  We've had our fireplace going but otherwise nope.
  • Nope.  We have two electric fireplaces that heat our house up by 4 degrees and it barely costs anything to use them.  We will probably turn the heat on sometime in November.

  • We have!  We just moved here from FL though and it's chilly!!  We have to get used to this weather again!  We've had our heat on for about 2 weeks!
  • We have a few times. My body temp is so out of whack right now it's ridiculous. When everyone is freezing at work, I am totally fine. During the day I seem to be fine in cooler temps. I only seem to get cold at night now.

  • We haven't yet.  Our house was 63 this morning.  I'm thinking we might have to pretty soon.  Ugh.  I hate the winter.

  • Yes, but I only have it set at like 66 so it hasn't really come on all that often, maybe once or twice in the morning and then once or twice at night.

  • we just turned ours on last night. it was only 60 in the house when we came home so.... it was time.
  • I turned our heat on Tuesday morning. It was only 65/64 (which is what it would be if the furnace was on and programmed for night) - but for some reason I had a horrible chill that I couldn't shake. I took a hot shower and was still freezing so the heat came on.

I feel guilty as it really isn't that cold and I had hoped to get through October - especially with as mild as it's been - but I was just SO friggin cold!

The highest it is programmed to get is 67, so it hasn't been running too much.

Next weekend I have to put plastic on the window and seal everything. Fun. :(

  • We live in a condo on the 3 floor and are facing South. So we have never had to turn the heat on. We usually have to have the blinds down so the sun doesn't heat our place too much, otherwise in the middle of January it will literally be 80 degrees in our home. We normally have to sleep with the windows open at night otherwise it's unbearably hot in our room.

I'm not looking forward to paying a heating bill someday though because I'm a freeze baby and like our place at 72 degrees.

  • I knew my insulation was good, but after reading this post, I realize just HOW good it is.  It is 73 in my house right now.  We haven't used the heat.  And I had a couple of windows open yesterday.  It will have to be consistently cold to get us in the 60s and needing heat.
  • Nope, we are ridiculous! My husband LOVEs the cold and I just don't fight it any more so once the house hits around the lower 50s then we turn on the heat.

To give you a hint of how crazy we are 64 is "warm" for our house.
