Safe area to run in while in ATX?

We are coming down to Austin in a few weeks for a game.  While we're there, we would like to be able to run in the mornings.  We're staying downtown in the Hyatt, and I'm curious about running near/around Town Lake. Is this a safe area?  Are there trails around the lake that would make this easy to do?  Thanks for all the advice!

Re: Safe area to run in while in ATX?

  • there's one big trail that goes around the lake - always tons of people walking, running, riding bikes, etc so you definitely won't be alone.  I've never heard of it being unsafe - that being said, I wouldn't go alone at night.  but that goes for most places, IMO!

  • Yes, the hike and bike trail around Town Lake is definitely safe in the mornings. A lot of people run then. It's also beautiful and right next to your hotel, if you're talking about the Hyatt on Barton Springs. You could always ask at the front desk if you can't find the entrance to the trail for some reason. Have fun!
  • Thanks ladies!  I really appreciate your help.
  • I am on Town Lake every morning around 6:00am (in the dark) and feel completely safe.  That being said, I run with a large dog.  There are plenty of people out (many alone) at that hour.

  • you can run anywhere in austin and it is safe....except the highway!!!
