What version of Adobe photoshop?
My stepmom has offered to buy me a gift with a coupon she has for Staples. I was thinking I would like to learn to use photoshop, but I see that there are many versions out there.
Which one should I get? I'm a total novice at photo editing and illustrations, but I also have a degree in art, so I could either be an amateur, or I can take it really far. Who knows.
What are the differences?

Photoshop CS5 is over $600, unless you have a previous version and are upgrading.
Photoshop Elements 9 is under $100, though.

GIMP is a photo editing program, but definitely does not have the capabilities that Photoshop does.
As for the different versions of Photoshop... CS5 is the most recent, but there really isn't a HUGE difference between all of the CS series, just minor updates. Although, CS5 does have a 3D image creator, and I believe it has the most updates out of all of series. But if there isn't much of a price difference, I'd recommend getting the latest one anyway, just so you can update it easier and cheaper in the future.
If you're an artists and you want to use photoshop for artwork and not photo editing, i'd recommend getting a drawing tablet. Some Wacom tablets come with the low version of photoshop as well as other drawing programs. It will say on the box. I have the Wacom Bamboo Fun and that came with Photoshop 7 and a few other art programs.
Also, if you are a student, you can get the student discount on the Adobe website. Photostop CS5 is like 700 dollars in stores and 300 dollars from Adobe with a student discount.
