Diagnosis: IBS, now need advise
So the doctor thinks I have IBS. He said he wanted to try diet change before he put me on any meds because the meds can have side effects. Bloodwork is pending. So those of you with IBS, any advice is welcome. He also discussed going to a gastroenterologist. He gave me a handout on foods to avoid and I already eat very little of the foods on the list, except chocolate, I LOVE chocolate

It suggested increasing fiber, I eat a lot of salads, so maybe try some fiber supplements? Thanks for any help!
Re: Diagnosis: IBS, now need advise
I have IBS too. I was diagnosed with it when I was in my teens. I can go from being constipated to having diarrhea. My doctor at the time had me using metamucil to regulate it, and I used that for a couple years.
Right now I just deal with it and it seems to have gotten better as I've gotten older. I poop at least 2 times a day, if not more. I can be constipated in the morning and by night time, I could have gone 3 times. My heart medication makes me a little on the constipated side, so I end up taking a laxative/stool softener every day or every other day, because I want to be able to go every day.
I don't avoid any foods, although I know which foods really mess with my stomach, so I might choose not to eat that. Aside from the metamucil, I don't think my dr recommended any meds or supplements, what did your dr suggest? What were your symptoms?
Sorry everyone for the TMI!!!

My symptoms are gas, pain, bloating, and diarrhea. He said there aren't really any good medications now (they were recalled due to bad side effects, like death!) and OTC tend not to work. He did say if it got worse he could try some other meds but they weren't always effective (he didn't say what they were). I'm going to try the fiber and see if that helps. I have gotten sick after eating some foods but then I will eat them again and be OK.

Yes, death is kind of a bad side effect!
I have a friend who can't eat chocolate for similar reasons. She substitutes carob in baking and such. It's not the same, but it's better than nothing. Good luck!
I've tried GasEx, Mylanta, Tums. None of it helps when the pain starts
I'm just hoping I can make it through tonight at work. Friday nights tend to be the most stressful and when I have the most pain.

I have IBS.
I would first get an appointment with a gastroenterologist. There meds you can take to help as a preventative measure and when you have attacks and they most certainly do not cause death. (I have two of them... I am in no danger.)
I will find my fact sheet my GI doc gave me that might help you. It lists different triggers (caffiene, alcohol, stress, dairy, etc.) You don't need to give up things you just need to try to identify triggers (if there are any). I will see if I can find it to send to you.
One of the first things my GI doc told me to do is set up a calendar. Star the days I am sick. On the days I was sick, she told me to write down what I ate and drank that day. Over a course of a month or two, I was able to see a hormonal pattern. My prescriptions helped in terms of if I felt I was having a bad day I could take one as a preventative measure.
My GI also recommended (and swears by) an OTC supplement called Align. It regulates your system. It seemed to work for me.
Align is a probiotic and can be found next to all the antacids at the store or pharmacy. It is about $30, but I keep coming across coupons online and in the Sunday paper for a few bucks off.
It will make you go to the bathroom every morning like clockwork, but the good bacteria will kick the bad bacteria's butt.
I would really recommend seeing a GI doc though. I found it to be very helpful reassuring to know that I wasn't alone, it is a normal problem and to talk to someone who understands what I am going through and help me work through it.
I have the information, but I need to delete some of my personal info from it. I will try to attach it on Monday at work.
Good luck!
