My wedding ring is scratching the shat out of my ering.

My ering is a cathedral setting and the wedding band sits lower, and I guess the friction of the prongs on the wedding band are scratching the base of my ering.

Is anyone else having this issue? Do you think a frequent polish or redipping help rectify this?

  • My wedding band is channel set, so I don't have the prongs... Have you thought about having them soldered together to keep them from rubbing against each other?  What metal are they?  I'm guessing white gold since you're talking about redipping?

Good point about soldering, but I want to have to option to wear my wedding band along, especially since my ering sits up so high (I'm thinking when we have kids, doing housework, etc.). They are both 14k white gold.

  • Yeah, I hear ya on that.  I don't want mine soldered either, but thought it might be an option.  I don't know too much about redipping, but I would guess that it would probably get rid of the scratches, depending on how deep they are.  I mean, are they scratches or dents?  I'd guess if you tell the jeweler when you take your ring in about the spots they can make sure they're filled in - even if they have to dip more than once.

  • Mine's been scratching a bit, but it helps to buff it with the cloth the jeweler gave me.  If you don't have one, I'll bet you could buy one somewhere pretty cheaply.

  • Having scratching issues, and I also swear my white gold band already needs to be redipped and it was just done in June. Rage.

At least you're not the only one. I had mine redipped in July.. so far so good, but it wouldn't surprise me if I needed it sooner rather than later.

The scratching isn't a HUGE deal, considering my wedding band covers it, but I am more concerned about the wear on the base & eventually eroding the metal, you know?

As usual, I'm probably overthinking it all ;)

  • Stef- Before the wedding, I would see scratches on my e-ring.  I took a soft toothbrush and some liquid dishwashing detergent and lightly brushed the ring.  That usually made the scratches disappear.  I guess they weren't really scratches afterall, but maybe give that a try?

I have to go get my e-ring redipped.  It's ever so slightly more yellow than my wedding band. :-(

This might really help. I can't tell you the last time I cleaned my ring(s) on my own. I also have used warm water and some Windox too, which worked well.

  • Soft toothbrush and warm water is what I use to clean mine, and it works pretty well to get the gunk off the diamond.

  • I detest yellow gold on me, so I am vigilant about my ring turning.

  • Just a lurker here but I thought I'd reply to this thread.  My e-ring and wedding band are similar to yours and I hadn't noticed until I read your post.  Mine is doing the same thing!  Not a huge deal since you can't see it because the wedding band covers it, but I think I'm gonna make a trip to the jewelry store to ask them about it.

  • When we first picked up my w-band our jeweler told us this would happen with my rings, but I just opted to have them put together....my setting's pretty low though.
