How to iron thin polyester costume?

I hate polyester. I thought that the reason people liked it was b/c it didn't wrinkle. Surprise! I bought this costume made of 100% polyester and it is very wrinkly. Any ideas on how to iron it without melting it? I will try it on the lowest heat. Do you put a towel over it? Thin material over it? Wet or dry? Other ideas?

Re: How to iron thin polyester costume?

  • I've ironed similar fabric by putting a towel over it on a low setting...if that doesn't work I would use a thinner material over it but test it first.  I would also try hanging it up in the bathroom so that the steam from showers will relax the wrinkles...I've done that for graduation gowns and it seems to help.

  • I always use an old bandana/handkerchief over the item and then iron...it doesn't have to be on low if you use something in between the garment and the iron (actually, it works better if the iron is hotter so it can push the heat through).  A pillow case works well too (usually something thinner than a towel so the heat can transfer through to the garment to work the wrinkles out).
  • Thank you

  • Polyester knit doesn't wrinkle... you know, the thick stuff that leisure suits and that godawful dress suit that granny wore on special occasions. That's the polyester that doesn't wrinkle.

I would mist it and toss it in the dryer on low for a few minutes first, then tackle it with the iron. I like to use a flour sack towel as a press cloth.

  • I would not attempt to iron it.  Dampen it then hang it in the bathroom for a few showers.
