Moving to Cincinnati

Hi ladies, we are considering a move to Cincinnati for me to go to grad school. Any advice as far as areas to live/not to live, and just general feelings about living in the Cincinnati area would be appreciated ! We haven't even been to visit yet, so this move won't be for a little while, but I am just exploring my options right now. Also, what is transportation like in Cincinnati - is public transit a viable option? Thanks !

Re: Moving to Cincinnati

  • It depends what your budget is like. Mt. Adams, Hyde Park, Mt. Lookout are all fun, active, young places, but are higher on the price range. Personally, I would avoid Norwood and East Walnut Hills. We live in Newport and love it.

Public transit isn't great in Cincinnati. If you live and work downtown, it's feasible but not if you have to go a distance.

  • What school are you looking at? UC? Xavier?  UC it may be easier to live "on the westside".  The westside doesn't have quite as many nice neighborhoods, shopping, dining, etc. But you get a lot more for your dollar.  Xavier is more "east side".  East side is younger people with more new shopping and dining, but has the price tag that comes with it.  transportation in Cincinnati is not great.  You will need a car for sure.  You may be able to take a bus to school or work, but again it depends on where you choose to live.
  • I have to disagree with the PP. DH and I live in East Walnut Hills and we love it. We are so close to Eden Park, Mt. Adams, Kohn Conservatory and downtown... we love it! I am 3 minutes from 75, 471, and 71 and have tax abatment. Most of our neighbors are young professionals too.

  • Suggest you give us more information on what you like and maybe head on over to city-data.com  There is a cincinnati forum there too.

Personally, I'd live in these areas:

    Madison Place

    Hyde Park

    Oakley

    Walnut Hills

    Madisonville (parts near Mariemont only)

Downtown (8th street or lower, but central because if you go too west, then it gets shady)

    Northside

Clifton (gas light district only, what people generally call clifton is actually corryville, and that part sucks)

I would not live in :

Mt. Adams "ritzy" area but no parking, expensive, and filled with douches every weekend.

any neighborhood on the west side, except for parts of westwood or pricehill

    too far away:

    loveland

    montgomery

    lebanon

    milford

  • For public transit, I'd either live downtown or clifton gas light district.  There are about 4-6 buses every hour during busy time to get you from downtown and back up to UC.  That's about the busiest routes cincinnati has.  Anywhere else you are going to need a car.
