trouble in school ::whine::

Not Bug, me.

I love history. I love stories and teasing out how the thinking of the time changed events, and how events changed the thinking. I read, mull and try to take my thoughts as far my knowledge lets me.

That doesn't seem to be enough for my professors this term. They want me to come up with arguments. Not just about whether the Black Death led to the Reformation or how, but whether I think those steps made sense. Or in another class whether Iconoclasm was the right response to events swirling around greater Byzantium.

I think those might be the most boring things you could ask about those subjects. IT ALREADY HAPPENED. What does it matter what I think should have been done, what's more much more interesting is why it was done. There's a thousand million billion ways history *could* have gone, but only way that it did and the interesting question is why that one and not the others. I can't imagine a more simplistic thing to say than my opinion about how should have gone.

Also, could my professors please just tell me what they want? I got a paper back that was supposed to be an analysis of a text and how it related to questions of historical objectivity (and whether such an animal exists). I got an A, but in the comments he chided me for not stating my position about whether historical objectivity exists or should be a goal. If you wanted to know that why didn't you foffing ask? Personally I don't think my opinion is as interesting as how we've come to value/devalue objectivity, but whatevs.

I'm really frustrated this term and feeling very not good at this.

  • Dude.  I completely do not believe that you cannot or do not like to make the argument about the whys.  That's totally up your alley.  You can do EEET!

    As a former grader, if you got an A, you did excellently.  Teachers have to find a couple of points to critique.  Otherwise, they don't get paid.  True Story.

  • Thank you for that last bit. I hadn't thought about there always being something to point out.

    On the arguing about the whys- I feel its like reading Romeo & Juliet and then arguing about whether or not the suicides were the right thing to do. It just completely misses the point. But if that's what they want, I guess I'll do it. I just don't find it very meaningful.

  • More pointless bitching:

    part of my problem might be my texts.

    The change in the climate of taste was a change of tastes in climate. Whereas earlier in the century it was the warmth of of the unique fact that was valued over the coldness of abstract systems, by the decades before 1900 it was cold fact that was celebrated as instrument of liberation from the suffocating humidity of overarching systems. Whereas earlier the individual fact was fondled, celebrated, bejeweled and dressed in layers of adjectives, by the 1880s and 1890s it was the plain and the unadorned fact which was a la mode.

    ...and so on and rather floridly on, draping itself with phrases of dubious meaning repeated with dubious emphasis for over 600 leaves of paper, until one wishes to daintily pluck a writing implement and shove it through one's retina.

    I know this is interesting to no one -- not even me -- but whining helps. Yes it does.
