Painful sex after yeast infection

So this isn't the first time I've had painful sex after a yeast infection, but its the first time I can tell its right after and due to the yeast infection because I am no longer in a long distance relationship.

Has anyone had something similar? What did you do?

When I had it before, my doctor said I was having too much sex but I before I ever had a yeast infection nothing hurt ever no matter how much I did it. I found some forums that said it was in my head and my muscles were responding the the memory, so I concentrated a ton on relaxing every time and it seemed to help. But now I just got done with another yeast infection, so the pain is back and strong!

I also saw something about physical therapy to relax and retrain the muscles.

Any advice/experience would be appreciated!

Re: Painful sex after yeast infection

  • has your doctor checked for other causes? such as pelvic inflammatory disease?

  • No, I haven't done that because it is not like it has always hurt since the first time it hurt, it's definitely related to the yeast infections. But I'll mention that when I see a doc next time and hopefully mention the physically therapy too but I doubt they have it here because its quite new in the US (I'm living in Chile)

  • Are you sure it's a yeast infection? I had something similar, that I thought was an ongoing YI, but it turned out to be the opposite, too much lactobacillus. From the pain associated with that, I did end up with the muscle memory problem you're talking about as a secondary problem. This very well could be part of your problem, but you'll need to figure out the YI issue before you can move on with the relaxing issue.

My doctor ordered lab work to determine if there was a fungal (yeast) infection, and what strain of fungus it was, since the medicine wasn't working. Sometimes women can develop a fungal infection that doesn't not respond to typical anti-fungals given for yeast infection.

So, I would find a doctor that would be willing to order you a fungal culture for one, and go from there. It also could be that your YI isn't clearing up entirely, and remains in the skin, without outward symtpoms, causing your discomfort. Bottom line, find a doctor that is motivated to figure out what's wrong.

  • Sounds like the yeast infection isn't totally gone or needs to be treated differently. Go back to the doctor.
  • Have had this, agree with other posters that this may not be entirely gone, wondering if its a lubrication issue also?

I had one Dr suggest to me that my vaginal pH might be off due to ongoing infections, and to try using Replens or RepHresh for a few days to see if things cleared up. It worked in one instance, not in another.

Those types of products are made to the smae pH of the vagina so if that is the problem, this might give some relief. Note: It may leave weird white discharge for a few days.

  • WHat type of treatment did you have? If you had creams, shorter treatments (ie 1 day vs 3 day) are harsher on the vagina
  • Also keep in mind that you can pass a yeast infection back and forth so your partner needs to make sure he doesn't have one or treat it if he does.
  • Thanks everyone.

My yeast infection was definitely a yeast infection and I treated it with a 7 day cream. My boyfriend had the yeast infection too with symptoms so he was treated for the same amount of time. Both of our yeast infection symptoms are gone now (that's why I'm pretty sure it was a yeast infection).

For those of you who had the problem, was it fixed with the "physical" issue was fixed.. none of you had the muscle memory problem?

I did. It's called vaginismus. www.vaginismus.com is a good resource.

  • Thanks a ton. That site is helpful!
