Which program do you prefer, FBB or NROL4W? Which would you recommend for someone who doesn't frequently lift weights. I'm a runner and do the occasional push-ups and abs, but that is pretty much it.
I'm done fighting the scale to lose pounds and want to focus on inches and body composition. I'm fighting a thyroid issue so focusing on my actual weight is just too frustrating and disappointing. I figure if I'm going to be a fatty, I want to be a strong one. Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Raynes
Weird, I just got through answering a similar question on H&F. I'll C&P my answer from there and then add some more, just special for you.
"
I did NROL4W at the beginning of the year and am part way through FBB now.
Writing wise, I like NROL4W much much more. Rachel's style of writing is just kinda, I don't know, condescending? It's a bit to peppy for my taste. After having read NROL4W I didn't learn a whole lot reading FBB, but have adopted her eating rules and I'm having some good success with that.
I learned a LOT reading NROL4W. Part it if might have been that I'd never been exposed to the whole idea of women lifting heavy before, but there is a lot of information in that book.
Program wise, I like NROL4W better, but FBB isn't bad. FBB is more so geared to the type of women that have never lifted anything heavier than a 10 lbs weight and generally spend their time in the gym slogging away on the treadmill or elliptical. NROL4W just assumes you're interested in lifting.
Both have their programs laid out in a similar manner, A & B workouts with super sets that target your whole body each time. NROL4W gets right into the major lifts (squats, DLs, etc) right away while FBB more so focuses on smaller exercises that build toward the big ones. The do show up, but not until, I think, the 3rd phase.
I'd say read both books and go from there. I'd say that for someone that's never ever lifted before, FBB might be a good starting place. That being said, I'd never lifted before (some machine stuff through highschool and university, but nothing serious) and I went right into NROL4W, but I also hadn't heard of FBB at that point."
I'd say that I like NROL4W more, but FBB would probably be good for someone who is more just interested in cross training. Both programs are pretty taxing on the body, but I'd say that other than some wicked sore hamstring some days, FBB hasn't really taken my out of commission that way NROL4W could.
If you can, read both books, even if you just get NROL4W from the library.
And, all that being said, it really all comes down to diet. You can't out train a bad diet. As much as you work out, if you're still eating garbage, you won't get the results you want. I always rolled my eyes at the idea of Clean Eatiing, but based on that fact that I'm actually losing weight now (I'd been bouncing around the sam damned weight all year) and I don't have to count my calories (which I'm so very over doing) and based on how I'm feeling, I'm a convert. The book The Clean Eating Diet Recharged by Tosca Reno would be my suggested resource there!
Last thing, stop calling yourself a fatty, you're beautiful!
We'll just not tell H about this little fact, m'kay?
Thank you so much for the feedback and for the compliment, I needed that.
I will definitely take a look at both books and go from there. It sounds like FBB might be what I am looking for with the cross training, but I really want to check out NROL4W too. I've been doing pretty good with running, but I feel like I am missing out by not incorporating lifting into my workouts. I've also seen your results and am hopeful I can have some success too. Great job BTW, you are really inspiring.
I completely agree with you on the diet part. I may be able to burn 300-500 calories with a good workout, but it does no good if I scarf down a burger and fries. I actually have The Clean Eating Diet Recharged and have been incorporating it into my diet and changing the way I eat. I am not eating 100% clean, but am "cleaning" things up and am happy with the results so far and with how I feel. I plan to continue with clean eating and someday take the plunge 100%.
Thanks again for the advice, it is encourage to see and hear actual results and experiences.
Awww, thank you! Can I just say that you are a gorgeous pregnant lady!
Pssh Auguri. You've run half-marathons. (Don't remember if you've done full marathons, but anyway.)
That makes you awesome and definitely not a fatty.

No problem! I love to get more people into lifting. It's so much fun.
I'm not 100% with the clean eating either, probably more like 80%?
We'll just not tell H about this little fact, m'kay?
Thanks Ringy. If you stick with running you'll be amazed at how addicting these races can get. First you want to go faster, then you want to go faster and longer. Still haven't done a full, but plan to someday...
Raynes, the last 20% of clean eating is just so hard. Having incredible restaurants and bakeries right around the corner doesn't make it easy. It will be hard to go 100% clean, and when I do, I will have to give myself a splurge meal every once in awhile.
Thanks again for the advice, I'm really excited to check out the books!
Hush this post is about you being awesome and healthy
