How are you preparing (if at all) for NaNo?

I am taking a 6-week class called "How to Start and Finish That Book" which is all about coming up with an idea, setting a schedule, marketing your book, etc. I thought it would involve more writing or be toward fiction-writing but it is actually more geared towards nonfiction writing. Still, I am trying to walk away from it with as much info as possible. It HAS helped me think about developing chapters, etc.

I'm also pulling out my copy of No Plot? No Problem! to graze through again (I read it 2 years ago during my first NaNo).

Re: How are you preparing (if at all) for NaNo?

  • The prep I've been doing this year is specific to this story.  I've read a couple of books about writing science fiction, and I've been doing research into topics my story will be covering (though I won't get all of my research done so some of my story details I'll have to make up as I go along - but the nice thing about the genre is it gives me a little flexibility to bend some rules a bit to suit my needs).  I've been doing some loose outlining and will spend the rest of this week and next finishing that up.  Oh, and I spent the last few months reading general "Writing Fiction" type books.

  • I'm hoping to get a lot of my prep work done this weekend for Nano.  I'm going to a family scrapbook weekend (all ladies who like to craft) and I plan to work on it a little there.  I figure a book is a craft since it is a creative endeavor so I might as well focus my energy on that.  Besides, my scrapbook is boring me so I don't want to deal with looking at pictures.

When I see MH Sunday and he asks me what I got done I'd like to say "honey, I outlined my novel and I have really good character sketches."  We'll see if it happens, but that's my plan.

Other than any potential outlining, I've been tossing ideas/plot points around in my head for the last two months and I've talked to my writing buddy.  We'll see what happens!

  • I'm pretty sure I've settled on which idea to use for my story.  DH works the night shift for the next few nights, so I'll probably spend my evenings trying to do a little bit of outlining.  I want to at least imagine the story from start to finish in my head.

  • So far my only prep has been reminding DH every day that I'm planning on writing through November again, so he knows I'm not going to be all there, mentally, for the month.  LOL!

Otherwise, it's all been in my head, I've just been thinking through the story and what I want to do with it.  I'm trying to get to know the characters and get used to them walking around in my head.  They still don't really feel at home there, so I may try and so some character sketches this weekend.  I don't think they're comfortable there yet because they still don't really have defined faces or names yet.  We'll see.

I'm not super-optimistic about NaNo this year, by the way.  Sad

  • I've been doing some research on Romania and some character development.  For some reason, everything with this novel is coming out in the first person so that's how I'm going to write it.

  • Not much as I only recently decided to do this.  I have an idea I've been thinking about for months but it's all in my head right now.
