Allergic to Spermicide?

I decided to try a new birth control and while waiting to start the Depo shot the effects of the pill wore off.  I am MUCH happier and want sex a lot more now that I'm not on anything.  DH and I decided together that it was okay for us to just use condoms.  On the off chance that something happens and I become pregnant, it wouldn't be the end of the world but we're not quite ready to start trying.

We bought Trojan condoms with spermicide.  But I think I'm either allergic to the spermicide or the latex.  I use latex gloves without a problem (nurse aide), so I'm thinking spermicide.  Basically I just get itchy (no odor, no infection).  Anyone else ever have this happen?  Thanks!

Re: Allergic to Spermicide?

  • I have had the itching but it was with the spermicide film long ago. I stopped using that and also you might want to check out your local pharmacy and see if they have condoms that are spermicide-free. They do make them. If you still get the itching, it may be the latex and you are sensitive down there with latex.

    Good luck!

  • I have used it before and it actually had like a warming/burning sensation for me and then when I went to the bathroom afterwards, it burned a little.  I don't think I had an allergic reaction since it went away quickly but it was very uncomfortable and I don't think I will use it again.  If I do I will try a different brand.  Maybe try a different form of it or brand and see if that makes a difference?

Yes, me too.  It is very common to be sensitive to spermicide; both my husband and I found in irritating.  I haven't bothered experimenting with different brands...I figure it's the nonoxynol-9, and just avoid it.

  • I have never liked spermicide condoms, They give me yeast infections; I stopped using them for that reason.

Sounds like that's what's happening to you. Skip the spermicide; use a diaphragm with store bought spermicide (I wasn't allergic to that) as a back up to no-spermicide condoms. GL

  • You'll want to try a couple of different kinds of condoms to get the best fit/least irritating ones. We were condom only for 8 years before we started TTC (and the jokes on us about being so darn careful, but that's life!) and we had several bad experiences with various condom choices- including spermicide condoms (Crazy itching- I knew it wasn't the latex though because we'd used other latex condoms before without problem) and "warming" condoms (OH GOD THE BURNING).

We changed every couple of years just to see if there was anything new we might like but we always went back to Trojan Lubricated. No spermicide- they're in the blue box and can come in an economy sized box and when you're buying condoms for years it's irritating as hell to buy them 12 at a time. The smaller boxes are only good for trying out something new or emergency "What do you mean we're out of condoms" middle of the night runs. :(

  • Im allergic to both. ugh. Id agree with everyone who basically said dont use the spermicide condoms and if you still get the irritation, try not latex condoms... If you do end up having to buy non latex condoms trojan supras are the best. Skyn condoms are horrible and your man wont be able to feel a damn thing and the durex avanti bare, break just as often as not.
