At rallies and other appearances, opponent Rep. Mary Fallin, 55, a Republican congressman, regularly mentions her new husband and their combined six children. Fallin, who had two children from a previous marriage, married a divorced father of four in November. She says her family and her experience as a businesswoman and officeholder have made her most qualified to be governor.
But remarks by Fallin at a Tuesday campaign debate, in which she cited her motherhood as a key difference between the two candidates, drew groans from some in the audience and stirred discussion about whether the emphasis on Askins' unmarried status had gone too far.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/23/mary_fallin_jarki_askins_2010_election__n_772886.html
Re: Have we discussed this?
Some of us discussed this the other night at dinner.
I think it's a ridiculous argument for her qualifications and only makes me think she has no others. I'd rather have someone with some actual relevant experience, but that may just be me!
Rub it in! Lol.
Apparently, she cheated on her first husband and it was a big deal in the divorce proceedings. There were some photos of her holding hands with a state trooper that was her body guard at Lake Draper and some questionable shots of them in the car together. The trooper got demoted to Lake Patrol which in trooper world is the sh!t list.So I'd say her whole "family values" thing is a bunch of BS.
Furthermore, she did very little while she was in Washington, except for cosign on things like congratulating Sam Bradford which I find meaningless.
I don't think her being a mother makes her a better candidate, if anything I like her even less now for that pathetic attempt to gain votes.
I told H about that conversation the other night, and he was surprised that women who were also mothers were so appalled by her statements. You all just earned some respect from him
I think it's a bunch of hooey that Fallin thinks she can get away with this, and I don't care who knows it. Giving birth doesn't always even qualify you to be a mother, let alone a governor or even an elected official. The two things have nothing to do with each other.
Raising children =/= running a state
I have so many quotes from "The American President" (my all-time favorite movie) that I could throw at this issue...
I think it just comes down to the public feeling like the person in power would vote the way they would if they were in office. I'm not sure why people would assume that just because someone is married or has children makes them more likely to vote the way you would because, like, omg you are married and made babies too! If anything, I think someone who is unmarried and without children would do a better job just because they might have more time and less distractions to actually focus on the job at hand... As long as we're assuming stuff.
Personally, I would think parenting in the public eye would open you up to more character attacks. I can count on my hand the number of people I have witness in the act of parenting that I would say, "I want to raise my kids just like that..." Because I take into account the vast majority of people, whom I watch discipline their kids in public and yank their backpack leash to pull them in to submission, and I do a full-body cringe.
I think, in politics, knowing that someone is married with kids is just as useless as knowing what religion they are... It really shouldn't matter.
This is an issue I wasn't going to bring up but what does THIS say about her? Was her parenting skills being honed when she was being photographed?
In no way am I diminishing the value of a parent, a mother's role is instrumental in society. But this does go back to the question in which many women ask themselves, "Is my value merely determined due to my ability to bear children?"
That's ridiculous. Because being a mom = being able to run the state of Oklahoma. Not.
I can't wait for this election to be over. Even H - who's only been back a week - is sick of all the election stuff.
Totally agree.
To me, that argument just emphasizes how much more qualified Jari Askins actually is for the job.
Fallin: "I was a state representative, Lieutenant Governor, U.S. Congresswoman, I owned a business and I have kids."
Askins: "I was a state representative, Deputy General Counsel for the Governor's office, Special District Judge, Chairman of the Pardon and Parole Board, and Lieutenant Governor."
Honestly, based on politics, I don't want to vote for either of these women. But I will be voting for Jari Askins because I feel she truly is "uniquely qualified" and I think she is a very intelligent, capable woman who knows how to get things done in our state government.
I think whoever called it a pathetic attempt to garner votes hit the nail on the head.
This was her way to identify with what, 1/3?, of the state's voting population. If you don't have anything in common politically, try to appeal to their love for their children! They'll see you're JUST LIKE THEM! Or not.
