TV in the Bedroom?

H and I bought a big plasma TV for the living room a few years back and moved the old TV into the bedroom.  That TV is now 11+ years old and starting to crap out.  So we're trying to decide whether we should replace the TV or not have one in the bedroom.

On one hand, I can see how it's totally unnecessary.  But on the other, it's so nice to cuddle in bed and watch movies on the weekends - especially with colder weather coming!  And I do like to watch the news in bed in the morning before I have to drag myself out of bed.

What are your thoughts on this?  Good, bad, indifferent?  Do you have one in your bedroom?

Re: TV in the Bedroom?

  • If you like watching movies in bed, I say go for it!

We have one in our bedroom but it gets 3 channels and we don't have a DVD player up there so it pretty much just collects dust!

  • we have a tv in our room and i don't think i could go without it!  When i first graduated college and got an apartment with a friend, we used my tv for our livingroom, which then left me without on in the bedroom.  I never realized how much i enjoyed having one in there!

I have my nights when i can't sleep, so i turn the tv on, set the sleep timer and that helps for some reason. I also enjoy having it in there whenever i'm sick.

  • We don't have one, yet.DH would like one, and I see the positives, but at the same time, I like the bedroom to stay the bedroom, without interruption or distraction from the talking box. To each their own.

  • We have one in our room that isn't plugged in or connected to the cable so we don't use it. We had it at our old place, too, but as soon as my brother moved out and we had the house to ourselves, we stopped using it. Now my brother and his wife are turning one of the rooms in their house into a gaming room, so we're just going to give them the TV so that it gets used and they don't have to pay $200-300 for a new one.

If you guys make use of it, then keep it, or even upgrade it. I love cuddling and watching movies, too, but we always do that on the couch, and drink hot chocolate :-)

  • i hate the concept of tv's in bedrooms.  i understand why people have them (all the reasons you listed) but i feel like the bedroom is for sleep and romance, not tv.  having a tv just puts a damper on those two things.  for us, we will never have a tv in the bedroom.
  • We have one but it's an old one I've had for years. I like it for background noise and for the news in the morning while I'm getting ready. I guess it's just what I've done for years and haven't thought much about it.

  • We watch TV before falling asleep so it would be strange not to have one...we went without one last year since the one we had wasn't working and it was hard to get used to.  Once we got it working again it was pure bliss!

Our bedroom is still for sleeping and romance even with a TV - it doesnt damper that at all, never has.

  • We have a tv in our bedroom because DH likes to watch sports and sometimes I would rather watch other stuff, so he will go in there to watch his sports. I think you should get a tv for the bedroom for sure!

I read this in some article years ago.  However, DH and I have a ginormous TV in the bedroom and we always will.  Our living room has vaulted ceilings and is always super cold, so we both prefer to be in our bedroom, where the sun hits, is warmer and cozier.  We also fall asleep to it w/ the sleep timer on.

I say to each their own.

See, this is kinda what I was getting at.  I have seen articles and heard other people say that romance suffers when you bring a TV into the bedroom.  I resisted having a TV in my bedroom for a long time b/c of that, but I've never felt that way since having one in there. I feel like our sexy time is more likely to be lacking due to job stress or something like that more than a TV in the bedroom.

  • I think people use the TV as their excuse as to why their sex life is suffering instead of trying to find out what's really going OR admitting that there is a problem in the first place.

I totally ditto JenO on this one.  If anything, having the tv in the bedroom is BETTER for us - he can watch while I read, especially since I go to bed much earlier than he does - I'm not by myself and we can snuggle.  And it's never gotten in the way - it does turn off - when we're in the mood.

  • by no means do i mean that people with tvs in the bedroom will have a poor romantic life.  but i think for me, i would just prefer not to have one.  plus we hardly watch tv, do not have cable, etc, so it is totally unnecessary.  i think people watch too much tv instead of communicating with each other, reading, doing stuff, etc, and having a tv in the bedroom just furthers that cycle.  i agree that everyone has to make their own decisions on this, but for us, these were our reasonings behind not having one in our bedroom.
  • JenO24- I think you are nailing it right on the head!!

We have had a TV in the bedroom forever. I have the same size flat screen we have in the living room in our bedroom. I spend lots of time in the bedroom throughout the day too to clean, watch TV, take a nap and I always have it on even if it's just for background noise. I watch the news in the morning while I'm putting my makeup on in bed to watch the traffic and the weather. I fall alseep to a show (golden girls, lol) it helps me clear my mind before I go to bed, if I don't turn it on a million things run thru my head.

  • I'm with Shauni on this one. H and I will never have a TV in the bedroom. We only use the bedroom for sleeping and sexy time.

  • I've always been a tv in the bedroom kind of girl but Todd put his foot down on this one.  He will not allow a tv in the bedroom because of what Shauni posted.  I love it!  It's so sweet of him to feel that way and I must say it works for us.  And I love the thought process of this...sleep and romance.

Although, there are times when I miss it. Especially when he is away at the fire department all night.  But that probably helps me sleep and I know it is helping me make time for reading, which I love.

So no tv in the bedroom works for us!!!!  I can see it from both points of view.  If you have a tv in the bedroom, maybe you could make some rules.  No tv certain times and it's allowed others and then stick to the rules???

We also watch TV before falling asleep.  I have a hard time falling asleep at night (afraid of the dark) so we set the tv to "sleep" for 15 minutes so I can fall asleep before it turns off.

We also like cudding up in bed on weekend mornings/evenings and watching TV in bed.  DH could seriously NOT go without a TV in the bed.  We actually used it a few weeks back and listened to the "Smooth Grooves" radio channel when we had our romantic weekend.

We've tuned into some of those radio channels before - it was something different and a nice change, but I do prefer to have the TV off all together when we're getting busy.

I think not having a TV in the bedroom is right for some people while it's right for others to have one in their room.  It depends on how the couple feels, but I don't thinks its right for people to automatically assume that just because there's a TV in the bedroom that its on 24/7 (like when it's sexy time), that it'll cause a barrier between the couple, or that rules should be set up and enforced because it could become out of control.

  • I am with Shauni on this one. We do not/will not have a TV in our bedroom and same goes for our possible future children.
  • We have a huge plasma in the living room as well, so far nothing in the bedroom. I've contemplated putting our old TV in there solely for myself thanks to J's ridiculously heavy tv & Xbox use .. watching him play hockey for 4 hours is no fun for me.

But even so, I still won't do it. We watch enough TV during the day and I don't think it's necessary for us to have in our room, at least not now in our 800 square foot apartment. Plus, I get to teach J how to share all over again. ;)

  • We only have one TV and that's in the living room. Since our apartment is small & our only available wall is the one shared with the living room, I don't see a need for a second TV, although I could possibly change my mind after DH opens up his Xbox 360 at Christmas time, lol.

  • The only reason we have a TV in our room is because a few years ago behind my back my dad gave MFD an old one and I came home and it was in there. hahahaha. I hate TV in the bedroom. That being said, I like to spend a Sunday watching all of my girly DVR shows on the TV in there. MFD must have the tv on before bed, which I hate.

  • We do not have a tv in our room and probably never will. I can't sleep with any light on which is when the tv would get used. So if I would be tired and H wants to watch tv he couldn't do it in the bedroom anyways. I like keeping the bedroom for rest and relaxation.
