Have you guys ever eaten at the Scenic Cafe? We ate there on Thursday and it was SO. GOOD.  The place looks so unassuming from the road and when you step inside but the food is surprisingly top notch and really fancy!  It's a bit spendy but I think it's a great "once in awhile" type place.  YUM.

The place we stayed was beautiful and right on the lake with gorgeous views, BUT, it was NOISY NOISY NOISY.  We could hear every time someone turned on water or opened a door.  Thumbs way down.  :-(

I looooooved the Glensheen Mansion.  Old mansion tours are one of my favorite things to do while traveling.  :-)  Have you been there?

Re: ***brifox***

  • Sounds like you guys had a great time!  We have walked down by the place where you stayed, and I always thought they looked pretty nice.  Bummer about the noisiness though! :(  Did you end up getting bikes at all? I figured when you said you were staying on the lake walk you were staying at Fitger's Inn which would have been a way closer bike ride than from where you stayed.

You know, we almost went to that Scenic Cafe last year but decided to go to Lakeview Castle instead, I will definitely have to keep that place in mind.  I have heard from others that is was pretty good as well!

I also LOVE the Glensheen!!  Did they talk about the murders and ghosts at all?!  The staff used to be banned from talking about it, but since there are so many publications about it now they are allowed to!  Randy had his Christmas party there a couple years ago, and we got to walk around on our own....it was pretty cool!  They have a separate tour for the 3rd and 4th floors that we have always wanted to do but have never gotten around to it!

I'm so glad you had a good time!  Duluth really is a pretty cool city!

  • We ended up not borrowing the bikes.  After Glensheen we drove to Fitgers to eat at the Brewhouse pub (yummy burgers!) and ended up just walking from Fitgers to Canal Park.

The place we stayed IS beautiful but the noise really bothered me.  Wednesday night wasn't bad because the units around us were empty but Thursday night was pretty bad.  :-(  The place was meant to be condos but when they didn't sell they made it a hotel. (There was actually a sign in our suite that said, "This unit available for purchase!"  Umm...no thanks.)  I think they turned one large condo into three "hotel rooms" and the sound insulation between those 3 rooms is basically non existent.  So to make a short story long I wouldn't recommend it if you know anyone looking for a place to stay.

We did not do the extended tour at Glensheen so we saw the basement, 1st, and 2nd floors.  They didn't talk about the murders at ALL.  Not one word.  We got a short book in the gift shop that explained it all.  CRAZY story!!  I really love mansion tours and Glensheen certainly is beautiful.  I kind of want to go back now that I know what happened there!  Our tour guide said that if someone were to build it today it would cost 30 million!!  Whoah!  I can't imagine how much that piece of property is worth...

Wow that got long.  Oops.  :-)

If you do go back just ask your tour guide about it, they will show you where it happened and where the bodies were found and everything!  Creepy, and yes, a super crazy story!

When we were touring the library the guide pointed out a complete set of Edgar Allen Poe first edition books.  DH Googled what they would cost while we were walking to the next spot and ONE book was $12,000!  I can't imagine what the complete set would cost.  Kind of nuts!
