Yay of Nay to the Patch BC (Evra)?

I am currently on Evra and it seems to be great (first month was horrible, but thats to be expected) Does anyone else have any experience with this form of BC?

Re: Yay of Nay to the Patch BC (Evra)?

  • I've been on it for 3 years.  The first month was awful but other than that ive had no other problems.  PM me if you have any other questions

  • i was on it for years and loved it. though i did hate how "dirty" the edges of the patch would get and how it would get kind of crinkled. but otherwise i really liked it. it was easy and rarely had to think about it!
Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

  • I loved it!!  Unfortunately, I developed an allergy to the adhesive after two years and had to stop using it.  I would still be on it if it didn't make me itch like a mofo.
  • It gave me two week long periods because of how other medication I'm on interacted with it. But for my other medication I have to take I'd still be on it.
  • Been on it for years and love it.  No complications or issues.  I did find that it stuck better and never came off when I put it on my front hip.  If I put it on my back hip it got caught it seems on my underwear and would pull away every now and then.

My doctor also has me on a 6 week cycle which is the BEST!

  • Oh a 6 week cycle sounds wonderful! I will have to ask about that!! It is reassuring to know it has worked well for others! I also found edges got gummy and dirty especially if I wear dark clothes. Thanks for the comments!
  • Loving it for 6 years now.

  • The risk of blood clots is higher with the patch than other hormonal BC like the ring or the pill. My doctor said the risk is even higher the older you are. I liked the patch, but was advised to switch to Mirena IUD

  • This is true. I think the research found that it releases more hormone in your system than other traditional forms of BCP, so they theorize that it comes with an increased risk. That or the risk was proven...I can't remember. But my doc talked to me about it and we decided that due to my age, activity level, and lack of other factors (like I don't smoke), that staying on the patch was right for me.

Talk to your doc about that one because he/she may have more insight.

  • I don't like the idea of hormone altering substances, period.  I'm one of those weirdos that uses condoms.

  • I used it for close to a year until I started having serious problems and found out I developed tunors at the site of where I put my patch-4different spots rotated with each week. Doc discovered the tumors were caused from the patch, and currently might be in a class action suit because of it. Horrible experience that has lasted over 3 years now. Not cool. PM me if you want more info.

  • I was on them for a year and then all of a sudden they wouldn't stick anymore... It was awkward. I couldn't keep a patch on longer than a day before it fell off no matter WHERE I put it. Now I'm on ortho tri cyclen lo (have been for 1 month) So far I'm hormonal and feel like crap but thats the norm for a new BC after years of none.
  • Used it for about 1.5 yrs and ended up hating it.  Not only did I start getting a constant headache I also got melasma (large dark areas on my face). The worst part was that I was too hormonal.  I would get so terribly angry at stupid stuff.  Good luck since obviously, it works for some people. I decided to use the Fertility Awareness Method (FAM) after I stopped using the patch and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
  • I used this for a while some years ago. Everything thing was fine, but then after a few months, it was like the adhesive on the patch was giving me a chemical burn. I stopped using it, and the skin was scarred for quite awhile. Eventually went away. No problems besides that. But that was a pretty big one, I think.

  • I used it for 5 years and LOVED it. I hated remembering to swallow a BC pill every day so this was perfect for me. Never had any problems with it.

I just went off it this past summer to TTC.
