Thoughts on furnace maintenance packages?

Hi ladies

my husband and I are looking into furnace maintenance packages since our furnace is inching towards 10 years old.  Everyone I've talked to so far doesn't think they are a good idea, but my husband would really like to have a plan where someone comes in once a year to do an inspection and let's us know what's starting to wear out.

Any suggestions?  Currently Direct Energy is having a promotion, but I can't seem to find any reviews online directly related to the furnace maintenance.

 Help!

Re: Thoughts on furnace maintenance packages?

  • I have never heard of such a thing, to be honest. Sounds like a money grab. If you maintain your furnace properly (changing the filters, etc) it will run for years and years problem free. We had a furnace in our condo that was 25 years old and it ran wonderfully. 10 years isn't that old in the life of a furnace.
  • I don't think they are worth it. Usually the things that "go" on a furnace unexpectedly are sensors or ignitors, which the inspection will not catch because the problem happens instantaneously.
