Wedding Announcement?

Did anyone put a wedding announcement in their local/hometown newspaper?

I've been thinking about doing this because I LOVE looking at engagement and wedding announcements in newspapers.  DH grew up in a different city so we may put the announcement in both our cities.

Re: Wedding Announcement?

  • we did this.  we both grew up in the same area so it would be the same paper for both of us.  i submitted the application 2 weeks ago?  who knows when it will go in...they seem to run behind here...
  • We are going to when we get our pro pics back. We will put it in my home town (waco) paper, our large city (austin) paper, and our hill coutry paper which just goes to our small surrounding towns.

  • Ive thought about it and would love to do it but its pretty expensive for our little rinky dink paper. It was $145 for our engagement announcement. Maybe ill do it for our first anniversary...i see a lot of those in our paper.

  • Eh, I don't plan on doing it simply b/c it is so expensive! I did cut out the little one-liner that said we got our marriage license. It just so happened to be in the paper the day after the wedding. :)

  • We are putting one in once we get our pics back. It is free here and DH works for the newspaper so we feel pretty obligated to do it.
  • MIL might be planning on doing it in Jeff's hometown.  I think she's waiting to get pictures.  I'm not really accustomed to seeing them in the paper so it's not something I'd spend money on, but where they live it's very common and she LOVES going through the paper and filling us in on all the latest gossip, so I'm sure she feels the need to have it in there.

I don't really have a hometown since I've moved so much, so it's a moot point for me :)

  • We did my home town only.  Simply because my DH didn't want to do his and my mom really wanted to have the announcement in the paper.  I really did it for her.  It was in last weekend.  Which surprised me because I thought the paper was further behind than that...I think I submitted it 2 weeks ago.

  • I just did it in my hometown paper and I think it was free!  I went to the application page and entered our information.  I thought that I would then be redirected to another page asking me to pay or at least give me a $ amount to post the announcement.  But I got a "thank you for submitting your announcement" message.  Does that mean it was free?  I'll just have to wait and see.

  • H and I both grew up in pretty small towns where everyone likes to see the latest gossip and everyone likes to "brag" about their kids by putting those types of things in the paper.  So I think both of our parents will do it, but I couldn't really care less either way.  I didn't realize you had to pay for those types of things, though.  I guess it makes sense that that's how newspapers make money, but $145?!  Holy caca, Batman!

  • i should mention that ours was free, otherwise i might not have done it.  debdeb, it sounds like yours was free too :)
  • Yeah I think so.  I was already expecting to pay $150 and up.  Yay for free announcements!

I'll have to see how much to post in DH's hometown.  We may need to pay for that one since he is from a large city, San Jose, CA.

  • My parents posted my engagement announcement in three papers.  Not sure if I'm doing the wedding announcement or not.
  • My mom works at the paper so our announcement was in the Sunday after we were married (She had put all the info in weeks in advance and they waited for our photo before publishing). I guess I didn't have to really think about it either way since I knew my mom would take care of it...
  • I didn't but want to. Thank you for the reminder.

  • We won't be. It is kind of a crazy price to put one in our local paper with a picture plus everyone we wanted to know about the wedding was invited. So we are going with saving the money.
