Giving out Halloween candy Q

DH and I were talking about giving out Halloween candy & were trying to determine if we had enough...which then led into how much candy to give out.  Do you give out 1/2/3 pieces per child?  Or does it depend on how old they are?  Back in the day we pretty much only got one per house, but sounds like things may be different now (and like kids need that much candy!), but thought I'd ask...

Re: Giving out Halloween candy Q

  • I am all for hands full of candy.  I dont give the ones carrying a 2 month old child but one piece (I am still shocked by this), but the little ones I give thems LOTS!

  • That is a good question.  At this point, I don't even know what the heck I'm going to give out.  It depends on what it is I'm giving.  If it's something small, like Tootsie Rolls, I'll give them a small handful.  It's it's the "fun" sized candy bars, I'd probably only give them 2-3 per kid.

This year, though, I'm struggling as to what to give out.  I may do something homemade--I was thinking decorative Rice Crispy Treats--we have a small neighborhood and I think if I were to email one of the Moms saying what I was doing, hopefully it won't be too suspicious.

  • I do about 3-4 pieces a kid. And then towards the end of the night if I have a lot left, I just start giving them handfuls of it so I don't have to eat it.

  • We give a small handful. . .but this year (along with last) we'll be lucky to see any trick-or-treaters. We're not an established neighborhood so not many know were back here.

Back in the day. . .people would always give us handfuls and as we got older. . just a few pieces.

Do people actually walk around with a baby to trick or treat?? I've never heard of this before.

  • I know people who have gone around with their baby in costume. They went to houses where they knew people though, so really I think it was just to show off the baby in costume.

Yeah, I've experienced this too.  It's just weird though, when I don't KNOW the people.  I'm kind of like a "uhhh, cute kid....Confused"

I can see people going around with their kid in costume and NOT asking for candy.  But this is an INFANT not dressed up with some 6 foot 5 dude holding the baby with a grocery bag.  Really.  I am ALL FOR CUTE, but not just to get candy.  I think its ridiculous.

I agree that is just weird. I wonder if it was even his kid?

  • Last year my mom was all excited and she bought be little treat bags so we made probably 30 of those...i'd put like one-two starburst like things, a sucker, and a piece or two of chocolate. We then had the left over candy on hand just in case...

    We didn't get a single trick-or-treater.
