HTM: Banning foods and the like

This started with me reading this article.

Basically, people want to ban this energy drink/malt beverage because people drink it and get sick from it.  The caffein in it can suspend the effect of the alcohol (which is equivalent to 4 or so beers), causing you to drink more than usual, getting drunker than usual, getting sick, etc.

I understand the banning of dangerous substances, but sometimes I think we go too far, and stop using common sense.  I get the banning of trans fats, because there really is a better alternative.

In New York, they want to ban the use of salt in restaurants, because people have high blood pressure issues.  Seriously?  Salt?  What's next? Sugar?

I know that obesidy is a problem in this country, but I feel like people need to learn (or re-learn) to eat properly and know that just because there is food available doesn't mean it needs to be consumed.  The government shouldn't be stepping in and making it impossible to get certain things just because people don't know how to control themselves.

 Thoughts?

Re: HTM: Banning foods and the like

  • I'm ok with it being banned because I think an alcohol energy drink is a ridiculous idea. It's basically taking stimulants and depressants at the same time. That can't be good for your system.

I will stick to alcohol for vegging out at night and caffeine for waking me up in the morning. Never the two shall meet.

  • I don't think it should be banned. If people are getting sick from drinking too much because of this drink, it's not the drink's fault. It's the people's own fault!

I also don't think salt should be banned from restaurants. Some foods should be cooked with salt. Restaurants aren't responsible for your health; you are.

  • The energy drink concerns me less than banning salt in restaurants (um... how do they expect bread to be baked?!), especially in NYC, which is a culinary capital of the world, banning potatoes in schools (maybe encourage baked potatoes instead of fries?), banning toys in Happy Meals, etc...

Since when do we need the government to be our mother?

  • I'm not a fan of Big Government, and I think this is a slippery slope. Whatever happened to personal responsibility? I'm all for warning labels and education (like calorie counts on menus) but telling me what I can and cannot eat or drink is taking it way too far.

  • Not that I'm all for this drink, but I think it should be left up to personal discretion. I know a lot of people that make terrible choices as far as food and beverage choices, but who am I to tell them it's wrong. Yes, it drives me crazy to watch people consume crap that is terrible for them, but I wouldn't want anyone telling me how to eat or drink either.
