Insurance Argument

Open enrollment is here again, my husband and I battled this last year too.

We currently pay $490 per month, pre tax for a plan that covers 100%, no deductible, $25 co pay on everything

He wants to go with a plan that will cost us $330 per month pre tax, only covers 75%, $50 co pay on everything, plus a $300 per person deductible before it covers anything

I did the math and on Davis alone last year if we were responsible for 25% we would have owed out of pocket, $4500 for all his appts, surgery, etc....  Not including paying a deductible

I think J is mad because I proved him wrong.  All it works out to us getting extra  a month by dropping down a plan is a whopping $100 (because of the pre tax thing). I don't think he is looking into the big picture, he is just seeing a little extra $$ in his paycheck each month.   In my opinion, not worth it.  The plan we are on is obviously the smart choice here.  Am I wrong?   opinions?

Re: Insurance Argument

  • i would personally go w/ the higher monthly plan because fifty dollar co pays can add up.  one thing to review is, is there a maximum of u paying twentyfive percent?  pardon my keyboard i cant use numbers etc from my phone eek

  • the max out of pocket is $3000 per person, so $9000 for all 3 of us

And yes, $50 will add up!!  heck the $25 co pay we have now adds up

  • I'd say you're on the right plan.  I can see where he would be frustrated but the argument you make is clearer and makes sense.

  • I would stick with the plan that covers 100%
  • We are in the same boat as you. Dh's insurance went up and there is a deductible now and they increased the out of pocket. I'm looking at my plans and I think we are going to go with a full coverage one and pay more monthly.
