Adam's silly

So the night before last, we slept with the windows open while it stormed because we both sleep better with the thunder.  Now Adam's all freaked out because there was a tornado like 30-45 minutes away from us and some trees were knocked down onto houses, roofs blown off buildings, etc, etc.  He was like "What if a tree had fallen on us while we were sleeping?"  Dude, quit being paranoid.  It's not like it happened the next street over.

Re: Adam's silly

  • Haha 30-45 minutes away?

When I was little we had a huge apple tree out back. One night during a storm it was struck my lightning and thankfully it fell in the opposite direction of our house. Our kitchen and living room would have been gone if it had fallen the other way. Now I live in a house with a gigantic pine tree right in the front yard. I really hope that one never falls, or we won't have a house!

  • That's something I like about living in a newer neighborhood - no huge trees in the yards to fall on the houses; not yet anyways. Our house backs up to a forest preserve but there is like an 8 ft concrete fence between those big trees and our yard.

Tornados are always scary though because they are unpredictable. I think its sweet he was so worried.

  • Our house is only about 3 years old, but we have GIGANTIC pine trees in our backyard.  TONS AND TONS of gigantic pine trees.  If one of those go down, it'll definitely take out part of the house.

  • The house I grew up in had a ton of pine trees. I hated having to rake those pine needles every year and then put all of them in trash bags...ugh!
  • God, tell me about it!!!  Those pine needles SUCK!!!!  We figured out a way to get rid of them all without having to do any work though.  We paid a neighbor kid 10 bucks to rake them up and then I offered the pine needles on Freecycle and someone came and loaded up their truck and hauled them off.

  • I'm paranoid as well.  It doesn't help that I occasionally watch StormChasers on Discovery channel.

You've heard what I've done, not what I've been through.
If you were in my shoes, you'd fall the first step." <3<3

  • And the loud screeching alarm just went off in my building... we're under a tornado watch... GREEEEEAAAAATTTTT.  There better not be a tornado warning.  Then I'd have to go down into the basement and it smells down there and there are cockroaches... GROSS!!!

  • Yikes stu! I hope there isn't a tornado coming through your area! We're supposed to have severe thunderstorms this evening. Which is wonderful since HH will be working out in it and I'll be home alone.

  • J gets paranoid about that stuff too. Me... not so much
  • I told my Adam that we're not allowed to move anywhere that tornados are very active.  We've had a few warnings here and there...but I'm still scared of them.

  • I mean, I know where we would go in the house if a tornado comes (the bathroom in the hallway because it's the ONLY room without windows) or if we had time, we'd go to my parents house (15 minutes away) because they have a fully decked out storm room in their basement... but that's about it.  I don't have emergency supplies or anything.

  • Jeeze, way to be prepared stu!

A tree fell on my aunts deck last winter I think. Luckily it just missed the house, but her deck is totally screwed I think. She hasn't done anything about it... lolol.

  • i'm petrified of tornados.  Where we live in NY, its rare that they happen, but sometimes we'll see a funnel cloud or something and they happen once in a while.

When I was little we had a warning/watch I forget which one is worse, it was the dead of night and my dad was watching the news and was trying to decide whether to scare the crap out of us and bring us into the basement or wait it out.  He decided better to be safe than sorry, so we hung out down there for a few hours, but really ever since then, I've been really scared of them.

  • We get tornado warnings every year, although not as many as Kansas & Oklahoma get. When I was 8, we were at my grandmother's house and there was a tornado warning and we could see the green funnel cloud through her back door's window - I was terrified. Ever since then, I have recurring nightmares about tornados!

We've had to send the entire building into the tornado shelters here at my work twice in each of the past two summers. It's really serious if it's our building because we have a call center that can't go offline except in dire emergencies. And earlier this summer, I was already at home around 4:30 one day when a big storm came through and Matt, Henry, & I, and the dog, all had to hang out in our one closet in the middle of the house because we don't have a basement. That same storm ripped through the area my work is in, just 8 miles away, and tore off part of the roof right next to the my department! Way too close for comfort!

Thats so scary!!! Another reason I love living in the mountains =]. We occasionally have a funnel cloud but nothing big, and never in my area.

  • I am also really scared of tornadoes. We had a tornado watch and subsequent warning today (we actually still have a watch until tonight). Every couple years everyone around here ends up in their basement for a couple hours at least.  Unfortunately, living in an apartment building on the second floor, our basement is plain, bare, concrete... not somewhere I want to be.   So David and I just sort of sat in front of the TV staring at each other and saying "so what do we do now?" Thankfully the tornadoes looked like they were headed east of us, so we were off the hook. But really, we are SO not prepared.  Oops.
  • Well, they're closing down schools and daycares here.... maybe I'll get to go home early!!

But then again, I remember being in HS here and they would cancel school the day BEFORE they THOUGHT it was going to snow.  Lots of times, there turned out to be ZERO snow.  Way to be on top of things, Huntsville!!

And I just found out there are tornado warnings until 9pm! Wonderful!

  • Yeah, our "watch" turned into a warning.  We had to go down to the basement.  I'm about to head home 2 hours early!

  • The sun is out here, just the winds blowing really hard. Our power went out a minute ago, but it came back  on =[ I was hoping to go home an hour early.

  • I love that I am in Texas (right in the middle of tornado alley) and the weather is friggen BEAUTIFUL here today!

The wind was super strong when I left work yesterday but today has been gorgeous!

I've been in at least 20 tornados in my life between Texas and Georgia.  They don't really scare me anymore unless it's forecast as a "big one".  But they can be quite unpredictable.

ETA:  I hope you all make it through this evening safely!
