Guess what I get to do this weekend??

I get to sit on a beach in Duluth, freeze my arse off in damp windy conditions and pray that my husband doesn't kill himself.

Sounds fun, doesn't it?

With the weather turning and all this wind, apparently the Lake Superior surf is "pumping" and DH is determined to surf it - and better now than in mid-January when he would be dodging ice chunks. He missed the emails from the surf group last weekend but thinks things will still be quite good this upcoming weekend.  (insert eyeroll from the wife who both admires his ambition and thinks he is CRA-ZY)

So while he is out freezing in the water and attempting to catch waves (and really - they get some narly waves up there!), I will be huddled on the beach wrapped in as many layers as possible with 911 on speed dial.

Two weeks ago we were in CA and there were no surfable waves - and now, back in MN we get surfable waves on the Lake? Really?!? Hilarious!

Oh - and DH has specifically requested that I be ready to call 911 in case he gets caught in a current or gets hypothermia or any number of other awful things happen. He doesn't worry about sharks in the ocean but worries about cold in the lakes . . . greeeeeaaaat.

So wish me luck, Nesties! We are going to keep an eye on the forecast and be monitoring surf-reports. I am hoping he is able to get some other guys to go with him - guys who have done this before and know the ropes (and rocks and currents and that jazz). It is absolute insanity but DH is determined and I've gotta support that, right?

  • Sounds scary, crazy, and awesome all in one.  I'm the type of wife that would be like you are not doing that- at least not without me that is ;-)  But even the cold might deter me...

Hope it goes well and you don't end up having to call 911!  Does he wear a drysuit for that???  That might help with the cold issue...

  • I honestly had no idea people surfed on Lake Superior. Guess I'm just behind in my knowledge of MN fall activities:) I agree about wearing a drysuit; hopefully that would at least prevent extreme chillyness.

Hope you have a fun weekend and that the weather works out!

  • Hope the cold doesn't get to him.  I would be just like you sitting on shore, but man I'm sure that would be a cool experience.

  • Thanks for the support, ladies! What we do for those we love - crazy, isn't it?!

I think he has a wet-suit, not dry - but it is the thickest you can get and he's used it for winter surfing in England, so it keeps him relatively warm.  He also has boots and a hood, but I guess the hood is a bit constricting on his neck and causes more problems than it's worth. I'm hoping he finds a new one before the weekend!

He attempted to surf Lake Michigan in early October  (a few years back) and the wetsuit worked then - - but Michigan is a lot warmer than Superior . . . eeek! I think the current conditions are probably fairly close to English winters (at least in Cornwall) so hopefully it won't be too much of a shock to his system.

I'm proud that he is so determined to do it but also a bit worried that he might get in over his head (literally!). At least he is accepting his limitations to a degree and has agreed to go to a "beginner" beach instead of Stoney Point where things really get crazy - and dangerous!

DH loves surfing - after the guitar it is probably one of his top passions (followed closely by mountain biking). If I insist on living in a land-locked state, I have to support his quest to find surfable waves - no matter how insane I think it might be!

  • They did a news report on this last winter....so crazy!  We were down in Canal Park on Saturday morning, and there were definitely some good "surfing" waves!  I figured there would be people out there surfing that day!  If he goes off of the Park Point beach it is all sand pretty far out (as far as I know).  Good luck, there is no way in H-E double hockey sticks I'd be out there....that lake is freezing in the summer!

yep! That's where we are going. It is pretty sandy - but also pretty shallow!
