My campaign adventure before 3PM today

I kind of filled Kristen in on some of the stuff, but this was my morning while on the campaign trail:

So, I am in Cincy and we get sent out for canvassing I am in a cute neighborhood that has seen a lot of foreclosures, lots of vacant houses, etc (it is so sad and one looks straight out of a horror movie and I was afraid of something coming out and grabbing me). It is windy and looks like it is going to rain and the tornado sirens start wailing--there is no ditch (what we were told to jump into if a tornado comes through).

We are finishing up our section and are followed by a dog/wolf (he was huge and not friendly looking at all) for three blocks and he started to gain on us (started trotting and going a lot faster).  It was pretty freaky and we decided (my walking buddy and I) to go into the next open yard where the was a pickup truck on the lawn to hide.
So my co-walker hops into the truck and there is a huge spider so we hop out (it was a big as his hand). The wolf follows us but is on the other side of the truck. There is a tow truck with a guy and we try to get his attention to help us, he drives off. The lady with the mullet across the way ignores us and goes back inside. We find an econoline van (looks like a something a pedophile own--straight out of and svu episode) to possibly crawl under because the sirens aren't stopping, and then it starts to rain, then 20 min the sirens stop and we get picked up.

In short, today I survived a tornado, a wolf, a spider and possible kidnapping (if even in my own mind)...I love campaigning!

Re: My campaign adventure before 3PM today

  • That's quite a day, EAB!  I'm glad you're having fun.  I've never done canvassing, but I bet it's...interesting?

I'm starting phone banking Thursday night, so I have to shake my fist at you in a sportsmanlike fashion.

  • Not all of Cincinnati is like this. Stick out tongue But the weather was super brutal today. Not a great day to be hoofing it.

  • I may not even vote.

  • SB, the canvassing is fun if you have a good walk book and a some fun people out with you.  Phones can be a pain, but play it up a bit, give different names (Betty is one of my favorites) and just be personable.  The scripts they give out are usually written for people who do not have any social skills or cannot think ontheir own. We did a bunch of calls this evening before heading out to the Riverboat casinos.  I even tried to convince Mod to have Mr. Mod join us while spnding money.

At this point before the election, you should just be doing get out the vote calls (GOTV), and they shouldn't be more than "HI I am blank a volunteer at X Campaign I was just calling to remind you to vote on Tues, and hope that you will vote for X"  If they have voted, "Thank you so much for going out to the polls, blah blah blah."

Kristen, I know Cincy is not all like that, it was just the books I was given.  There are some really great neighborhoods, and I love the people here.  I would live here if Ellis would ever consider OH.

  • Yeah, I have done the phones before.  It can be boring but you get a few people that definitely make it worth it.  I am sure at this point we'll just be reminding people to vote, to bring ID, and helping them set up transportation if they need a ride.

Every vote not for David effing Vitter is completely worth it, though.
