Thoughts on the gubernatorial race?

From what I've read so far, I'm not liking either Deal or Barnes. I've heard from coworkers that Barnes was not well liked as former governor, do you agree?

Help a GA newbie-ish person out, please....thanks.

Re: Thoughts on the gubernatorial race?

  • I've been reading up on it, and I don't like either candidate. I think Deal is corrupt, and I don't trust him. I didn't care for Barnes as governor when he was in office. I have a write in candidate that I'll vote for if I can.
  • The whole race is pathetic.  I haven't seen two more ridiculous candidates, and I normally don't get fired up about politics.  I am extremely disappointed in the way both have been campaigning.  If you get a chance, there was a debate yesterday, and I think the recap is on AJC.com.  If I didn't feel so strongly in civic duty, I wouldn't be voting at all.  I will probably write in a vote, b/c the independent candidate isn't any better and has no political experience whatsoever.  :::headondesk::

  • It's a lose - lose situation for the State of GA in my opinion. Both candidates suck. I will likely vote for Deal, even though I really don't want to.
  • all i can say is that i am super sick of hearing all of the people bashing on the ads. it's really getting on my nerves. dh said he was going to write me in as a candidate...
  • roy barnes is a moron, and a terrible governor.

and nathan deal is so sketchy i can hardly stand it.

    i wanna vote for neither...gross.

  • I've always liked Roy Barnes.  I've heard him speak a few times and I know people who practiced law with him and have only good things to say about him as a person.  I think he lost the election because of the flag issue, which disgusts me and, but for that, he already would have had another term.
  • John Monds, all the way. Honestly, I just learned about him about a week ago. I'm on him like a cheap suit.

Yeah, I learned about his candidacy while googling. I'm a registered Independent, so I'm seriously considering voting for him, but I'm concerned about the viability of a third-party candidate. However, he seems by far the best choice.

My concern with Monds is that he doesn't have any experience, but I don't know if that's any worse than Deal being corrupt and Barnes being inadequate. Tongue Tied  I shall do some more research on this guy....

  • I am voting for Monds because of his stance on tax reform.

  • I haven't heard anything about him.  I'll have to research tonight.  I'm so sick of all of the politicians right now and have no idea about how I'll end up voting.

  • I won't express any specific opinions on the candidates here, but these are some things you ladies may want to think about:

    1. In Georgia, you cannot write in a candidate who lost in their party's primary election. If you do, your vote will not count.

    2. If you vote for a third party candidate, it makes it more likely that there will be a runoff between Barnes and Deal. In order to win, a candidate has to get over 50%. If no candidate gets over 50%, and there is a runoff, we will have to listen to their ads for another several weeks and still end up with one of them in office in the end.

    3. Whoever becomes governor will have influence over the re-districting that will happen next year based on the new census. Whether you like it or not, gerrymandering is pretty much a fact of life, so this is still something to think about.

    That's my two cents!
