Gift Ideas for a Toddler?

I am starting my Christmas shopping and desperately need ideas for a 1 1/2 year old boy. DH and I are stumped! Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Gift Ideas for a Toddler?

  • How much are you looking to spend?

Here are a few of Aiden's favorite things:

    touch & feel books

    Balls

Fisher Price Lil' Zoomers Spinnin' Sounds Speedway & other Cars (anything with wheels)

He loves to color with pens & paint

I have a lot more but those are the ones that come first to my head. Also member ships to places are a great give when you have to buy for more then one kid

  • I don't have any great suggestions, I just wanted to say congrats on being organized and getting your shopping done so soon. I haven't even started to think about holiday shopping!

When my nephews were that age, we got them a lot of books. Not sure if they were used regularly or appreciated, we just felt that the kids were getting more than enough toys from other people in the family. Also, their house had limited space and books are small :-)

  • When my niece turned 2 she liked her cupcake wrapping paper more than our gift to her, she kept trying to 'eat' the cupcakes.

Her favorite gift of everything she got was a tube of chapstick and a candy jewelry set.

Moral of the story: it's beyond easy to please a toddler- I'm sure anything you get they will love.

We are thinking about spending $30-$40. I think that should be enough to get a good gift for that age.

Ha! Thanks! I like to get my shopping done since our schedule gets super busy starting in a couple weeks with Holiday parties, charity events, etc. Busy time but I love everything about it!

I always get the children we buy for books too for the same reason as you. This particular child's parents told us that they don't want us to get him  books as gifts for Christmas or Birthdays but any other time of the year we are more than welcome to buy him books and give them to him when we get together for visits... Zip it!

So glad I am not the only one that thought that!

Is the little boy a strong walker? or is he just starting to walk? Aiden loves his Fisher-Price Stride to Ride Dinosaur

Really? You were specifically asked NOT to get them books? Why?

I guess this is one of those "you're not a mom so you don't understand" things, because I can't imagine being a parent and specifically telling people not to give my kids books as gifts.

WOW the only reason I would say no books is because we have so many, but that wouldn't really work if she said you could get them books for the other times of the year.

I agree. It's odd they would request no books but it's ok to buy him books for "non-holidays".

  • That is too bad about no books because Goodnight MInnesota is an excellent book and they not have Goodnight Baby Jesus (for Christmas!) which is super cute also.

Hmmm my nephews and little boy cousins love CARS! Cars the movie, nascar cars, cars in general! So my vote is for CARS.

  • That age is when they're obsessed with push/pull toys, so a toy with a string they can drag around would be perfect.  We also have Wildlife Federation "Animal Babies" magazines that come monthly.  This is the perfect age and you could even get a 2 year subscription for $30.  My 3 year old still likes them and we keep them all.

I remember as a parent 18 months was hard, not quite a baby, not quite a toddler, so if anything, aim towards 2 year old slightly-too-old-for-them toys so that when summer rolls around parents have something more advanced for them to play with.

  • I will always ask for books.  I think a kid can never have enough books.  Plus, I don't think people just bring books by for every visit.  Weird.

That said, Michael loves balls, push toys (grocery cart type things), or his toddler basketball hoop.

We found it to be an odd request as well and now we feel uncomfortable, like they expect us to bring "gifts" for their child every time we visit.

With our other friends we've never received this reaction when we buy their children books. So it threw us off guard.

  • That is weird and rude (the "no books for holidays" request).  Honestly if someone said that to me, I'd just stop bringing gifts altogether.  That's just terrible.
  • I love blocks for a toy because they don't always have a set purpose, and kids can use them for years.  Otherwise, toys they push or pull are good too.
