Europe Help Part II

So B and I are now holding reservations for the last week of April/first week of May for 10 days to Europe.  I was thinking the original itinerary below is too much, but I'd like some opinions

 Original Itinerary

1)  Paris (4 days)

2)  Munich/Romantic Road/Rothenburg, Germany (2 days)

3)  Amsterdam (2 days)

4)  Brussels (2 days)

Itinerary 2

1)  Paris (4-5 days)

2)  Munich/Romantic Road/Rothenburg (3 days)

3)  Amsterdam (2-3 days)

Itinerary 3

1)  Paris (4-5 days)

2)  Rothenburg/Romantic Road/Munich(3 days)

3)  Venice (2-3 days)

And to reiterate, B's never been anywhere in Europe.  I've been Paris, Amsterdam, and Brussels.  LMKWYT.  Thanks ladies

Re: Europe Help Part II

  • Over on the honeymoon board, a lot of the girls were saying that they liked Bruges a lot more than Brussels... if you've done Brussels before, maybe Bruges would work?

The way I travel... well... I need at least 3 nights in each place. The arrival day is always a wash because of travel time, and then, if you're only doing two days, that means you've just got one full day in the city! That's not enough time for me, personally.

  • I'd go with itinerary 3.  Brussels is really nice, but I spent 1 day there and really felt like I saw everything I wanted to.  And if you're comparing Amsterdam and Venice, I'd take Venice any day.  Especially that time of year, the weather will be lovely in Venice and kind of iffy in the Netherlands.

On a side note, Rothenburg was one of my favorite places I've been - I'm sure you'll love it!

Well that was a crazy couple of years.

  • I'd do 3. I've never been to Brussels, and while I thought Amsterdam was cool, I really loved Venice. Have you decided where you are flying in and out of? I think that would play a factor in my overall decision.

  • My suggestion is similar to Leo's.  I loved Rothenburg when I went (a million years ago), and I would love to go back.  I definitely preferred Italy over Amsterdam.  I didn't make it to Venice on my trip, but would love to go back. I would also go back to Rome any day of the week.

  • I like #3 as well, especially since you've already been to Amsterdam and Brussels.

Also, not sure when you are travelling in April, but note that Easter Sunday falls on Apr 24, and Good Friday and Easter Monday are holidays in many European countries, which could mean increased crowds and/or places being closed during that long weekend.

  • I also prefer Venice over Amsterdam BUT I think it really depends how you plan to get there.  If you only have 2 or 3 days to spend it Venice, it would be awful to spend a good chunk of that time on the train down there.  Even flying can be a big hassel.  I personally would prefer to stay in Northern Europe since that's where you will be most of the time, so I guess Itinerary #2 has my vote.

Edit: If you could arrange to fly back to the States out of Venice instead of having to return to Paris, that would definitely make Itinerary #3 more workable.  H and I just did a similar trip a few weeks ago and flew into Athens but returned from Istanbul - it saved a lot of time, and in our case, a TON of money b/c it was wayyyy cheaper to return from Istanbul than Athens for whatever reason.  So that's something to consider too.

Have you considered Prague as your third destination?  Rothenberg is on the far Eastern side of Germany, right?  That might be fun and easy.

  • Rothenburg is actually southwest Germany, and not too far from Venice.  In terms of getting to Venice, I'd suggest overnight trains.  I took an overnighter from Venice to Munich and then a more local train to the romantic road (Wurzburg then Rothenburg from there, and it was pretty easy.  I'm a huge fan of the overnight trains - you have to be low maintenance, but if you can deal with that it saves time and money.  It's an awesome thing to be able to go to bed in one city and wake up in another!

Annnddd I just realized there is actually a geographical disctinction between RothenbUrg and RothenbErg, hahaha.  Totally different parts of the country!   OK, your travel plans make a LOT more sense to me now and in that case, I vote Itinerary 3 too!

  • Haha I had NO idea there was another one - I think I spelled mine wrong!  Oops.  I was referring to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, on the Romantic Road if that clears things up.

  • Thanks everyone for all the help!  As of now, we are holding a reservation flying into Paris and out of Nice.  After we booked, we realized it wouldn't quite be beach weather, so we should pick somewhere else.  We're planning to travel on miles--the last week of April/first week of May is basically the last week before they go up in number of miles you need to get to and from.  We are going to see if we can change our return from Nice to Venice or Amsterdam or Brussels, depending on which itinerary we pick.  I'm leaning towards itinerary 3, and I think B is too.

Oulluet:  We're saving Prague for a future trip:  Berlin, Prague, Vienna (I've been to Prague and Vienna, and I love them both)
