Re: This is horrifying.

  • Practice continued for 25 more minutes.

    This pisses me off:

Practice continued for 25 more minutes.

In all fairness to the coaching staff, it would take at least that long for an ambulance to show up, collect the injured party, take them to the hospital and determine a fatality had occurred. Additionally, the article linked didn't say "practice continued" it said the following:

After the accident, Notre Dame football players were on the field for about 25 minutes before leaving the field quietly, about 15 minutes before the scheduled end of practice.

Moreover, I am sure the RO for local PD and the EMT's responding would much rather NOT deal with a crowd of bystanders.

I'm in no way defending ND's decision to allow the guy up there in the first place, as that seems like a clear-cut case of negligence. Nor am I defending the "Safety Last" culture to which decedent apparently subscribed. And for all I know Brian Kelly is a total dickhead.

But the facts aren't all available.

It's a tragic, sad and unecessary event. Sympathy is more appropriate than vitriol at this point.

I can't imagine continuing practicing from the second the lift blew over. There's no excuse.

  • If the players indeed just remained on the field, I think that's different. I mean, I can imagine people just hanging around talking about what happened.  If Kelly was running drills, he's an ass.

He was already an ass for having the kid up there in the first place.

  • Maybe. Probably.  Though I suspect the head coach probably isn't involved in arranging for taping.  I'd bet that's an asst. or someone in the athletic dept. but he surely knew something had happened.
