I'm teething. For realz.

Edit: I didn't realize how long this would get, so here's some cliff's notes.  I have back molars growing in, even though I'm not supposed to HAVE back molars, and they hurt like a mo-fo. waaaaaah.

------

Ok seriously, my gums behind my lower molars have been hurting lately. Sore, and sometimes it feels like a popcorn kernel is stuck back there or something.  And last night, while eating dinner, all of the sudden I was in some serious pain on one side.  I felt around back there and felt something sharp sticking out, which was intensely painful when I touched it.  And it was bleeding.

I thought I might have cracked the back molar somehow (on orange chicken??) and that the nerve was exposed and I ran to the bathroom to look.  Lo and behold, something is sticking out back there.  It's red and inflamed so it's hard to tell if it's tooth, but on the other side I can clearly see something pointy that looks like it's about to break the surface.  I think I must have scraped off the thin layer of gum that was covering the pokey part, hence the blood and extra pain.  I can't even chew on that side now.  The unbroken side hurts to the touch but is otherwise fine.

The weird part is that I have had SEVERAL x-rays, from different dentists, which all showed that I don't have wisdom teeth.  Not surprising, since I have other congenitally missing teeth and it runs in my family.  But now...well, where did these teeth come from?! I haven't had teeth come in since I was 12, I don't really remember how to deal with this pain.

Of course I don't have dental insurance.  I really really want one of those icy rings for babies to chew on right now, it's driving me crazy.

  • yes honey, sounds like you have wisdom teeth coming in :)

I was just talking to my friend about this the other day.  Actually having your wisdom teeth in your mouth seems to be foreign to americans.

He has his coming in too and he's freaking out.  Although sounds like you were told you wouldn't get yours.  It's probably good.  I have a friend (a bit older) with no teeth left and it depresses her to no end.

  • Jeff actually JUST got his removed maybe two months ago.  I thought it was weird, since it seems like usually people get them removed much younger.  And of course I rubbed it in that I don't have any wisdom teeth.  This must be karma.

  • Oh ouch! That sucks!

Is it open enrollment at your job so you can sign up for some health insurance? If only one is coming in maybe they can pull the other wisdom tooth out?

  • That sucks! I don't really have any advice, except maybe get some ice chips or a popsicle to soothe the pain? Feel better soon, wisdom teeth are never a "good" thing when they are coming in.

  • Don't let the dentist take them unless they are impacted!

There is no reason why wisdom teeth HAVE to come out unless they are sideways.  I have all of mine.  Sure they were uncomfortable coming in, but I'm thankful to have all my teeth.

This. I had to have my taken out or I would've been in SEVERE pain down the road because the roots would've wrapped around the jaw bone or something. Unless they're going to mess up the alignment or they are impacted then they don't have to be taken out. I think most people just opt to get them taken out.
