Maybe the GOP will STFU about ACORN now

...ok, doubtful, but a gal can dream.

SACRAMENTO -- The owner of a firm that the California Republican Party hired to register tens of thousands of voters this year was arrested in Ontario late last night on suspicion of voter registration fraud.

State and local investigators allege that Mark Jacoby fraudulently registered himself to vote at a childhood California address where he no longer lives so he would appear to meet the legal requirement that signature gatherers be eligible to vote in California.

Jacoby's arrest by state investigators and the Ontario Police Department comes after dozens of voters said they were duped into registering as Republicans by his firm, Young Political Majors, or YPM. The voters said YPM tricked them by saying they were signing a petition to toughen penalties against child molesters. The firm was paid $7 to $12 for every Californian it registered as a member of the GOP.

Several agencies had launched investigations into Jacoby's activities, including the Los Angeles County district attorney's office, which issued the warrant for his arrest earlier this month on felony charges of voter registration fraud and perjury.

Efforts to reach Jacoby were unsuccessful.

  • This doesn't erase what ACORN has done.  Any group that commits voter reg fraud should be prosecuted.

I don't mean to imply at all that voter fraud is a-OK. But I'm sick of hearing about the ACORN thing because ACORN itself was defrauded (video). They didn't give people registration forms and tell them to fill them out fraudulently. ACORN had to turn in the fraudulent forms (and often flagged forms they suspected to be fraudulent) because they are not permitted to destroy them.

According to Lori Minnite, professor at Barnard College, between 2002 and 2005 one person was found guilty of registration fraud; 20 peoplewere found guilty of voting while ineligible; and 5 people were found guilty of voting more than once.

Again, I'm not actually making light of voter fraud, but history shows us that voter suppression is much more problematic than fraudulent voting. So I get really frustrated that voter fraud is being used as one of this year's scare tactics when the data just doesn't back up the claims that it is a major problem.

I think what is worth pointing out is that fake or trumped up cries of voter fraud, particularly so close to an election results in voter suppression.  Just talking about ACORN will suppress votes.  Now, I believe in free speech, so I'm not saying the media shouldn't cover it if it is really a serious crime, but the fact is, it's not.  So, why suppress votes?  It's sickening.

Ditto!  The media gets me so cranked.

Like the whole "swift boat" thing.  The actual ad was seen by very few people.  But thanks to the media, millions heard about it.

  • Why would this story make us less likely to talk about Acorn? This company should be investigated as well. It doesn't cancel out what Acorn is doing. Acorn is doing on a national scale what this guy did in one state. Unlike the left I'm not going to act like this was underlings who managed to coordinate massive inter-state fraud without the higher ups having a clue.

There is evidence of actual voter fraud in Dem counties thanks to Acorn. One example- In Washington state, where a major Acorn scandal took place there were more votes for governor than there were voters, in some Dem counties targeted by Acorn. It's a problem and it deserves a serious investigation.

Voter supresion is disgusting and a threat to democracy as well. That should also be investigated and publicized. This is not an either or scenario and nothing should be swept under the rug. Acorn is not a victim and it really baffles the mind to think that informed people are willing to make excuses for them just b/c their presidential candidate is associated with the group. If anything that makes it more important to investigate.

Huh? You GOPers LOVE the word associated this time around. McCain spoke at an ACORN function, so I hardly think Obama's any more "associated" with ACORN than is McCain.

Please provide me with some factual support that ACORN was, for this election, intending to register people fraudulently and to have them vote fraudulently. I provided you with links to facts that show that ACORN was defrauded by its employees. I provided you with links to back up my assertion that the threat of voter fraud, although not to be taken lightly, has been overblown. Just because you say that ACORN was intentionally attempting voter fraud doesn't make it so.
