Wearing red to a wedding?

What are your thoughts?  I have a wedding to attend in May (I know, I'm shopping super early) and I was thinking about wearing this:

http://www.express.com/banded-cap-sleeve-dress-27584-22.pro?Mft=red+trend&Mpper=3&Mpos=0&Mpg=SEARCH+NAV&Mrsaa=*&Mrsavf=SIZE_NAME&Mrsavf=category&Mrsavf=Color

But I know some people have issues with wearing red to a wedding.  I guess the old tradition is that it means you slept with the groom?  And other people think it's too AW-ish.  FWIW, someone wore red to my wedding, and I didn't mind.  Though I did think she looked kind of slutty.

Opinions?  Would it be ok if it was a less sexy dress? (if it helps, I'm pretty flat-chested so I won't be showing any cleavage in it)

Re: Wearing red to a wedding?

  • I wouldn't have a problem with red.  In many Asian cultures, red is good luck.

I don't know if I would go with that particular dress though.  It's an awesome dress, but in red, I do feel it's a little too much.  In other words, yes, if it were less sexy, I would absolutely have no problem with it.

    Sorry.

  • I think red is totally fine and I don't think that dress is too sexy at all, but then again my BMs wore a red dress and all 3 of them had tons of cleavage! If you love the dress but are concerned about being too AW-ish, just pair it with a black shawl or blazer or something.

Exactly what I was thinking.  I don't mind red, but you can tone it down a bit with a sweater or pashmina or something if you would feel more comfortable that way.  There were two girls wearing red at my wedding, and I didn't even blink an eye at it.

  • You can only wear red to a wedding if you are Lia's MIL. (j/k)

Red is fine, generally speaking - I wore a red dress to a wedding the week after ours, so don't call me a hypocrite here - but based on your link, I think it's a bangin dress, but might be a little much for a wedding - very slinky? I guess would be the word. A shawl or something would be cute, but will you wear it the whole night?  If not, I'd probably look for another dress - or just another color - or save this one for New Year's or V-Day - your H will fall on his face when he sees you in it.

ETA - love the gray version of the dress too - very classy.

  • I think it is totally permissable. My Aunt work a dark red silk dress to my wedding & looked fabuous and classy. I mean, why not? If it's a classy, flattering dress dress, I don't see any reason to avoid it. Now if it's a red skin tight borderline hooker dress (which is probably what gives red at a wedding a bad mantra), then I'd reconsider. Stick out tongue

  • Personally I would wear red if I felt inclined.  But I think that specific dress is a little too low cut and too short.  Maybe I'm showing my age, but I think it's too much for a wedding. Sorry!
  • Oh, and I have a wedding in April and you're totally giving me an excuse to start shopping now. Love it!

I also love that dress you picked (I just looked), and think as long as it's not too boobalicious like it is in the photo, it's adorable! If you are afraid the red is too much, maybe try the grey color?

  • I totally post and ran on this one.

I should have added, I would have had come kind of sweater/shawl, I'm always freezing.  And I really can't reiterate enough, it will not look like that on me!  It is kind of short though.  However, the bride for this wedding wore an extremely sexy dress to my wedding, so I figured it was ok.  I'm not saying it was bad, I thought she looked great, but I just mean that I figured it wouldn't bother her, KWIM?

I really don't look very good in grey (washes me out), and I don't like wearing black to weddings even though tons and tons of people do it, and a lot of people did it at mine and it didn't bother me.  I'm weird.

  • I don't like it for a wedding. To me, it says night out with the girls, or date night, but not wedding guest. I don't think it's formal enough, and to me it looks like a generic AW dress that someone would wear to a wedding. Also it's waaay too wintery or autmnal for a spring wedding in may. Keep looking for something that's that's really a standout- but in a good way
