Hospital for Labor/Delivery?

I was just wondering how do you go about choosing your delivery hospital? My current doc is affiliated with North Shore University Hospital - is that a good one for having babies? Are there any others?

I just want to know to satisfy my own curiosity. Not yet pregnant.

Thanks.

Re: Hospital for Labor/Delivery?

  • I got an OBGYN recommendation from a friend. They are a practice of 5 working together. They share being on call and one of them will deliver me at the hospital. It's North shore in Manhasset. My friend was happy there ant I've heard other people that liked it. I would be interested in what others have to say here though too.

  • You can approach it by which OB/Dr you like - or if you don't have one you want to deliver your baby - you can research based on the hospitals statistics.

    http://www.motherfriendly.org/mfci.php

    http://mommypoppins.com/ny-kids/birth-place-alternatives-where-to-have-your-baby-in-new-york-city

There's also a free guide that is published each year that you should definitely find for when you are pregnant. It's called The New York Guide to a Health Birth - its by choicesinchildbirth.org

NYC hospitals have unbelievably high rates for cesarean section - something you should know and be aware of when selecting a hospital to give birth.

  • I'm nowhere *near* pregnancy, but...

I chose my Gyno based on a recommendation and i totally adore her and it turns out that she's affiliated with St. Luke's, over on the West Side, and they have birthing rooms! Which is the delivery option i'm most interested in. Although...i don't think my gyno could deliver me if i choose the natural/birthing suite route...so i'm actually torn! (no pun intended) I'd feel safe and happy to have her deliver me (which DH feels more comfortable with cuz he never wants me to feel pain...ever...), but i'd also want to try the other route...

What to do, what to do, for my way in the future baby... Stick out tongue

Do you have the time and the energy to do a bit of research of docs vs. hospitals? Do you like your gyno now? Do you want to go more natural or do you not mind an epidural? Would you feel more comfortable with a midwife and/or a doula?

Good luck!! I know you'll figure it out. Big Smile

  • Wow! Good pointd! Now my dumb question - when choosing an Ob/Gyn, does he need to be affiliated with the hospital that you want to give birth at? Or can you be like, doc, I want to have this baby at XYZ Hospital and they will work with you and your doc? Sorry, not used to the US Health System. Thanks.

  • Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the hospital you mentioned (being I live out in SI), but like Liza said, do a little research and inquire within. I'm pretty sure all hospitals will allow you to take a tour of their L&D/Maternity wards. Also, you can google search them on here. HTH's...

As for your second question, I'm pretty sure the Doc has to have affiliation with the hospital you'd like to choose. Some docs have priviledges at more than 1 hospital, so you can always ask him/her.

For me, picking a hospital was completely different. I worked for both hospitals here on SI, so I know them both fairly well. I work at SIUH, but will be delivering at RUMC. Although my doc has priviledges at both, his main hospital is RUMC, which is fine with me being I work in L&D at SIUH. lol But, from asking around, a lot of people like RUMC vs. SI. It was recently renovated, so that's probably why...plus, it's a smaller hospital, which means a smaller nurse vs. patient ratio.

Anyway, enough of my rambling. You have plenty of time to look into it. GL...

  • I heard that often your obgyn doesn't deliver you. The practice I found is a branch of Northshore and has 5 obgyns. I'm rotating through them all with my appts. I'm pretty sure one of them will deliver me. They rotate who has hospital duty.

  • Northshore is a great hospital, one of the best NICUs in the area. That's where I delivered. You have to deliver at the hospital your doc is affiliated with, which is actually how I ended up at my current doc - I wanted to deliver at Northshore. Musiscout - it sounds like u go to my doctors! Northshore OBGYN across from bay terrace? My docs is Gilad Greenberg, but Dr. Melgar delivered me. They are all great.

I thought I might be going to the same place. We waited awhile for our appt., but I really liked the place. They are very good and I felt very comfortable there.

Cool, you will love them. Try to get early morning appointments if you can (if you can take the morning off of work). I usually went in the morning and was in an exam room in under 20 minutes every time. The ONE time I had an evening appointment, we waited an hour and a half.... The other annoying thing about that office is they put you on hold for literally 10 minutes every time you call, unless it's an emergency. So, be prepared to sit on hold for a while if you call with a routine question. My friend is currently 16 weeks pg and she goes there too!

  • I knew that I wanted to deliver at a specific hospital (LICH), as I happen to live 2 blocks from it and I figure it would be great to be able to labor at home for as long as possible and not have to worry about taking a cab or driving anywhere.

So for me, I picked the hospital first and then found an OB affiliated with that hospital.

My OB happens to be in basically a private practice, so she will be delivering me unless she is on vacation or sick.  If she can't be there then whoever is on call that day will deliver me.

As others have said, it is very common for OBs to be in a practice with a few Drs and they rotate, so you would have whoever is going to be delivering that day.

  • Thanks for the input ladies. Based on what I see, my insurance has a lot of Ob/Gyns who are not affiliated with any particular hospital. My current doctor is affiliated with NSUH but she doesn't have an ultrasound in her office and if I do get pregnant, I am not going to a doctor who doesn't have this machine. I will just do my research. But I appreciate the input.

  • Karllen, look into Northshore OBGYN (my docs).  They are in bayside, but that's not too far from you.  They have an u/s machine in the office, the only time you will go to Northshore for an u/s is for your anatomy scan at 20 weeks.  They can even do NST's and BPP's in the office if you needed those (both are tests you would get later on if you were overdue or needed extra monitoring for any reason).

  • Thanks MrsKocal!!!  I just called and they do take MagnaCare! I kept looking online on the magnacare website and it showed the same doctors at other faraway locations so I thought this was not possible. I just have to figure out how to get to and from there, if I do decide to go that route.

    Thanks again!

  • You're welcome.  And I just realized I might have been unclear - I mean the only time you will go to Northshore, as in the actual hospital, is for the anatomy scan.  I just realized that since the practice is also called Northshore, that probably didn't make much sense. :-)
