c25k, nestie group?

i'm doing it.  starting monday.

the couch to 5k program is for beginners and works on interval training to build up stamina and eventually be able to run a 5k.  It's only three days a week and I was wondering if we had any other ladies here that wanted to start and we could email a couple times a week to keep each other motivated, etc.  Any takers?

more info here if you've never heard of it:  http://www.fromcouchto5k.com/articles/training/the-couch-to-5k-training-plan/

also - i see that there are lots of iphone aps about when to go/stop/rest, but do y'all know of any that come with music?

post your email here, or email me at shanwalk2 at yahoo dot com if you wanted to jump on this fitness train.

Re: c25k, nestie group?

  • i'm a c25K success story!!  =)  it took me 2 different times to start it (the first time, i only got to week 3 before i quit), but I successfully finished my 5K without walking in May!

i liked Suz's Couch to 5K podcasts.  it's just music (different each week) and she chimes in at the intervals to tell you when to walk/run.   google to find the link.

goodluck!!  now's a great time to start, when it's not so hot!

  • I have an ap but haven't used it much.  It says it will use your ipod music.  It's just called C25k.  You just add tracks to your playlist.  It also gives you audio alerts, which you can turn on or off.  twitter.com/c25kapp

I'm doing weight watchers and aerobic and weight classes right now instead.  Running really hurts my hips, gotta love being an hourglass figure...

  • I am aiming to start Monday as well.  I haven't thought about what I'm going to do, though.
  • I did it last year and got up to running 30 minutes but stopped over the summer and haven't started back again. I want to start jogging again, so maybe a check-in is exactly what I need.

I also used the podcasts from Suz and really liked the music. They can be downloaded at kissmyblacka** dot org.

You can email me at my screename at aol dot com.

  • This is the original Couch to 5K program:

    http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

And having just looked at Week 1 of each, the original seems like an easier start. :)

I just started this week, and so far I've enjoyed it (as much as one can enjoy having their butt kicked by a stranger telling them when to stop and go).

  • PS - MrsMillerTime sent me these podcasts, and Week 1 has been the perfect music for running.

  • Okay I'm so in. Where are you planning on running ? Would you be interested in meeting to run? I could commit to atleast one day a week at the same time, if you want a running buddy. That would so help me stay commited in the beginning.

  • I've opened this post like 10 times.  I could do this.  Right??  I used to play basketball.  I used to have to run miles in high school.  I could do it now, right??  I think if I had people holding me accountable it would help. DH is no good at that, so sign me up.

  • hooray!! i'm glad there is a few of your interested!

(mandy, you can TOTALLY do this!)

carissa, I will probably be running in the evenings with DH - except on Wednesday when he's already playing soccer - so I'd be game to meet up Wednesday mornings.  You know where I live, right?  Regardless, I could (potentially) meet somewhere close to home (south of the river) and drive back home to shower before work (I don't have to be in until about 11 on Wednesdays).  Would that work for your schedule?  I would love to run town lake - but wasn't sure if that was easy for you.

for everyone else:  i'll gather emails tomorrow mornings (if you haven't posted yours - please do, or email me.  I think posting here one time a week and keeping a "reply all" email thread going may work!)

yayyyyy! getting exciting about my bodacious bod that is going to re-appear in the next few months!

  • Count me in too. I ran all through grad school and loved it. Then I stopped when I started working and completely lost all my endurance. I'm also a many time c25k starter and stopper. I could use the motivation of getting through it.

  • I'm planning on starting in the next week or two. Mcurban posted a great link to another option to suz's. It had great music. I'm on my phone right now and can't find it right now but I'll link it later.
  • Ok.  I'm in.  Is everyone starting this week?  I'm going to try to start tomorrow.  It seems like Sunday/Tuesday/Thursday would be the best days for me since I'll probably be doing mornings.

This'll be the third time I've started this program this year. I've only ever made it to week 3.  Any tips on staying with it?  I think I have problems getting up in the morning.  And I'm too tired after work at night.  I know, excuses excuses.

This is what I'm afraid of.  My work schedule is not a set schedule.  So one day I can work 8 hours and the next day work 15.  So I'm tired in the morning and tired in the evening.  I'm hoping the motivation from everyone else will encourage me to keep on.

that's the podcast I was referring to. I also downloaded the runkeeper app on my iPhone. I like it cause it let's me know my distance and then checks into FB. That's my accountability if I want to skip a morning. What if someone notices I only went out walking 1x this week. I was not in the mood to go this morning and once I got started I couldn't stop early because the it would look really lame if runkeeper posted I walked for 10 minutes or half a mile? So I was determined to walk 1.5 so I wouldn't look lazy. Lol
  • Go ahead and  add me to the email list too! I'm actually on week 3 right now...should be week 4 but I got a nasty cold and didn't run at all this past week. It's my screen name [at] live [dot] com. I had been listening to these podcasts... http://www.ullreys.com/robert/Podcasts/page4/files/category-7.html They used to be on his site and now it looks like you have to pay for them...but I could send the files to you if you want!
  • I'm in! I started on Monday and today is week 1, day 2 for me.

I'm using the C25K app and I was able to add songs from my itunes to create my own playlist.
