Recs for getting dog puke out of carpet?

I came downstairs to find that our dog had gotten sick in a number of spots all over our light colored carpet.  I used Awesome because I was told that works great but so far, it's not working.  She's on antibiotics right now and I think it might've upset her stomach.  I need ideas of how to get these yellow stains out of our carpet!

What do you use?  I need tried and true ideas...thanks!

Re: Recs for getting dog puke out of carpet?

  • I've used white vinegar and citra-solv. Saturate stain with water, and let sit. blot up. Pour vinegar mixed with Citra-Solv (diluted) in warm water over stain. Let sit. Blot up with towels. (Paper towels are not absorbent enough).

I got citra-solv at my local organic market, but you can get it at Whole Foods and some grocery stores/Target.

  • I would try an enzyme cleaner like Nature's Miracle.  You can buy it at big box pet stores or sometimes my Target carries it.
  • I would second Nature's Miracle. If it doesn't work on the very first try, just keep reapplying, blotting (never RUB the stain!), and reapplying again.

If you're willing to shell out some bucks, I would highly recommend a Little Green carpet cleaner. I usually fill it up with plain water (without the cleaning solvent that Bissell sells - it's good for some things, but not dog puke) and use it in conjunction with Nature's Miracle.

  • I actually have the best luck with a solution of OxyClean.  We have a Hoover steam cleaner (full size).  I'll apply a paste of water and OxyClean to the stain and then go over it a little while later with the steam cleaner.  Our cat vomits every once in a while and our dog got hugely sick the other day...if you don't have a steam cleaner I would suggest investing in one.  Without it, I don't think I'd be able to get a lot of these stains out.

  • The only thing that ever worked for us on stains like that is steam cleaning the carpets.
  • Oxy clean works awesome (got red wine out of my white carpet) and then the target generic brand carpet cleaner in the sea-foam green and white spray foam works wonders for "pet messes" I have 2 dogs and foster 1 so I am always coming across some lil surprise !!

but either of them work great! hope you can get it out!!

  • I completely agree: Nature's Miracle is the best for any pet stains.  It really is a miracle.
  • When we had a professional carpet cleaner come, he told me that the best way to clean dog vomit is just a little dish soap and water.  He said not to use Resolve or to steam clean it.  Sorry, it's been like a year, so that's the only thing I remember.  I couldn't tell you what his explanation was!
