My car got broken into last night:( I haven't even lived in the city a week! I was parked in a good, lit area (b/w 1st and 2nd) on E83rd. My drivers side window was smashed, but all they took was my GPS...which was hidden in my middle compartment.
Ugh. I guess that is my NYC initiation? Now I need to decide to pay for the parking garage, or continue with street parking.
Re: my car:(
That really sucks. Did you leave the case for the GPS out on the windshield? Sometimes that's all it takes to whet the appetites of thugs.
This is by no means an initiation into NYC - just a terrible circumstance. My DH parked his car in Jamaica, Queens for years and even left the glass down a few times and nothing was ever stolen (but we didn't have anything pricey in there maybe except the cd player). I know this doesn't help.
Sorry about your incident.

Aww, man, that sucks!! Don't let this give you a bad impression of NYC - I've lived here all my life, always parked my car on the street in Queens and all over the city, and neither my car nor my parents' cars have ever been broken into.
::knocks on wood!!::
They say not to even leave the suction thing for your GPS on your window - theives know that if you have a GPS you probably just hide it inside your car, and will break in looking for it. Although my DH leaves his in the window and so far, so good.
I'm sorry to hear that. =(
Unfortunately, it was just bad luck...'cause I lived in one of the best neighborhoods on SI and my car was broken into. When people are determined, then they'll take what they want. =/
I'm so sorry that this happened to you. I don't think of this as a rite of passage, just an unfortunate consequence of living in an urban area in a bad economy. Car theft and car-related thefts are on the rise in the city. Our friend's car was broken into recently and he parks in a garage! Thieves will get to it if they want it badly enough.
Just the other day, I saw a car in our neighborhood that had all four tired stolen overnight. Yup. The car was propped up on cinderblocks. Probably took a group with a truck just a couple of minutes.
It's just a shitty circumstance that happens sometimes. Sorry it happened to you. Be extra careful about not leaving any hints about things of value in your car. Not a case, a wire, anything. Also, never keep your GPS in the car. Always take it out with you.
A few weeks ago someone smashed our driver's side mirror for no reason. Just kids being stupid. They did it to other cars too. Now I put both mirrors in and hope that it's too much effort to pull them out and then smash. Otherwise, there's nothing much else you can do. I still think it's cheaper to leave your car on the street and sometimes have this happen than to pay for a garage.
